Early 90's 52RI vs Current Production
I'd like to know if anyone thinks there's much difference between Tele 52ri's made in the early 90's and those made today. Any comments would be appreciated.

![]() Here is a pic of Bill Kirchen's well-worn 1988 52RI. The earlier 52 RI guitars are model# 1303, and generally had thinner necks. The earliest have the serial number (with dimple underneath) on the bridgeplate. Lots of folks like the earlier ones, and the first year 1982 models command big $, $1500 and up. many of the earlier ones have finishes that are now cracked and crazed, providing good visual mojo. In 1998, they changed the 52RI to model# 0202, with a fatter neck, and redesigned A3 pickups that many feel are superior (dunno the specs on the older pups). I noticed a significant change to the tone of the newer neck pups, real nice. |

That has got to be a refinish. Everyone I have seen has a hugely thick finish on them.

Hmm, wow everyone I see has a mega-thick hard finish. Glad to see them age naturally.
