Paul,

The calendar looks pretty nice!

Sorry for this (probably) dumb question - but would I be right in thinking/hoping that a decent chunk of the $25-odd will go toward the maintenance of this wonderful site?

I really hope so - if that IS the case, I'll dig deep and order one so that it will reach Rip-Off Britain in time for Xmas.

But I just DAREN'T tell Mrs. Fatman how much it is costing - she'll blow yet another fuse!....

Yes a very small amount of money comes to me. Because I've never had a calendar available before I have no way of gauging demand for this. So, I've had to go a very conservative production route that is pretty high unit cost, but one that does not require that I pre-purchase thousands of calendars.

I could order 1000 calendars and cut the production cost by 2/3rds, but I would have to front the money in advance, and I'd be left holding a parashible item if (when) they didn't sell.

But I do get a little bit. Maybe next year, I'll be able to preprint these and lower the cost to buy them for everyone.

Thanks
Paul

A good question.....but then that's the question I asked about the Fender catalog that led me to G&L's.

No "lefty" photos were submitted. But 35 photos were submitted and 13 were chosen. So, submitting a photo was not a guarantee of being in the calendar.

Thanks for putting this together, Paul. We need to do better getting pics to you next year (if it happens again) because you need more pics to choose from. Otherwise you'll need to ban the June/August/October/November "pose" because you almost can't tell the months apart.

I don't see much of a problem with a few repeated poses. Would you pass up looking at a swimsuit calender if four of the months had pictures of half naked girls laying the same direction on the beach?
I sure wouldn't, and as soon as I get $25 I'm getting me a calender.

I agree that from the sneak peek many of the pictures look very similar.

By similar, I'm agreeing with ChurchPlayer that the pictures for June, August, October, and November look very similar. The guitars are "posed" the same. Also, there's not a lot of variety of models.

obviously

some of you've found room for improvement. So I guess next year the selection of photos that Paul gets to choose from will be enormous...

That said, I like the result. I've had the chance to look at them in more detail and I like 'm. Specially june if you've got eye for detail

I got mine the other day (I had some pictures in it, so you can figure I wanted a copy). Anyways, I really like it. What's special to me is that this is something the TDPRI created.

Thank goodness I can finally get rid of that "Kittens in Baskets 2006" calendar we currently have hanging in the kitchen.

I hope lots more people submit photos next year, so there's even more variety. Well, lots of varieties of Telecasters, that is.

The price is a bit high, but considering it's a "Print On Demand" company, I think Paul has done rather well with it.

If he could guarantee how many would have purchased it, he could have done a bulk print of 1000 or so and brought the cost way down. But that requires a big investment up front that most people can't afford... Like $3000.00.

So considering all that went into it, that's not a bad price at all.
Maybe if a lot buy it this year, it will show him that a bulk order next year will be worth investment.

I think i'd be really cool, for next year, if a bunch of tdpri'ers got together with all their teles, lined them up, and took a picture of a fender army

Or Ole Fuzzy or Nacho just went in the back room and took a picture. (If they're not photographers, maybe they know someone who is.)

Ah, yes, we can start lining up our dream photos now.

Not bad for the first year of production.

As a photographer, I was not thrilled with the quality of many of the images, but that is not a negative comment. I just have a higher relative point of view when it comes to photos. I am the official photographer for my Blues society, too, and produced the last two calendars. I would be glad to help with the 2008 calendar and give tips to tele shooters out there to help get better results. And maybe more submissions, too. Seeing two vintage Teles that were refinished hurt a bit!

Here's a site that I did the photography for.

I do a lot of guitar photography also. My calendar has also done very well this year. I've sold a lot of them on Amazon.com. I can help also with the next one.

Fender just contacted me about next years calendar. I have no clue what they have in mind, but I'm open to the possibilities.

I really like those train photos! My son was born in Inyo county...

I also like your landscape photos. Top notch stuff. very good.

Members here submitted photos and out of 26 or so photos I had to chose 13. I believe I chose the best 13 out of what was submitted. Maybe next year more people will submit more good photos to choose from.

I'm an art director by profession, so presumably I can pick good photos, but for a great many people the difference between a "snapshot" and a "photograph" is a distinction that they are unfamiliar with. Many people had trouble with lighting, composition and especially high enough resolution.

Sales have been below 50 so far (way below) but I may try again next year and start earlier. So that folks have more time to prepare good photos. I started in September this year. Without demand for at least 250 calendars I can never really pre-print calendars from a regular print shop.

You bet they arrived on New Years Eve day and I went to the Post Office to send them out on Tuesday (yesterday). Only to find the PO closed due to Ford's Funeral.

Unfortunately, I had to go out of town today and so I won't get another chance to mail them until Monday after I return home.

It's coming. Honest.

It seems there was some confussion during the submission process as to what the image requirements were. I seem to recall the initial stated requirements were beyond the capabilities of many digital cameras. This might have limited the number of submissions. Perhaps we could get an early head-up on image requirements for next year's calendar.

Yes, last year I didn't even decide to give it a try until Sept. Which is late. And, when I posted the resolution requirements a lot of complaints came up. People asked for smaller resolution requirements. However, when it came to producing the calendar I needed even higher resolutions than I originally asked for.

I'm learning a lot about the process this year.
