terry, i'd like to say how much i love your dvd, which i just got-- i can figure out the notes usually on my own, but a lot of roy for me is the musical conception, and the mechanics of how he moved around the neck, and your video, although obviously just your best guesses about where he played his ideas, is really helpful. also helpful to hear that roy played .011s--- with this knowledge, it's a lot easier to hear when it's roy and when it's not. it also helps validate my decision to use .011s.
and olewichita, thanks so much for posting all the info. i'm going to incorporate your work into my own, and i hope at some point to contribute to the ongoing effort to preserve roy's ideas for future pickers, in the form of transcriptions, showing people how to play his stuff, etc. i've already started stealing some of it for my own playing-- |

Regarding 0.011s, it hard to say what all he used for strings over time. My 0.011 piece of data was at a single point. He may have changed later. It just seemed to me like the 70s Roy sound, with regard to his pitch rate-of-change with the bends, came out more authentic when I tried to play that stuff with 0.011s. YMMV.

I still think Roy's work on the live OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE album is the best live tele tone I have ever heard. Listen to his solo on No HardTime Blues. Still gives me goosebumps.
Any of course, James is still "James"....there will never be another like him. Im proud to have worked alongside of him on many dates inthe 70's. JB www.johnbeland.com

I can't agree more on the Okie album. Part of it was Roy, but Ken Nelson could make a great mix too. That and the Philly live album are my favorites. I spent a long time working out "No Hard Time Blues". I learned it from the original studio version, but was sounded so much better on the Tele live on the Okie album. So John, Since you got to pick with James, did the topic ever come up about Hag's "Workin' Man Blues" being played with a capo? I picked up on that even after the Roy video, and I was blown away how the solo and fills ALL came together capoed. Also, one of my unknowns is Nichols vs. Burton on Hag's "Big Time Annie's Square" on the "Someday We'll Look Back" album. Do you know who played on that?

Hi Terry
Great seeing ya up here. Its a funny thing, but when I was doing sessions in LA with James ( or any of the top dogs), I never asked him any shop questions, because I was trying to keep it together. I mean after all, he is "friggin" James Burton....my number one influence. Even when were together socially, I never pumped him for any info. I guess I was always too shy about that. LOL I also worked with Merle at his house. But when you're inthe studio with Hag it's always best to let him do the talking. We did speak a bit about the old Capitol Studio days and he was very animated. But once again, I was producing Merle Haggard and it was all I could do to not piss in my pants. Cheers terry JB www.johnbeland.com

I know what you mean about urinary incontinence. Thanks for contributing to this post, and thanks for the great picture. Where can we find those recordings of you with Merle?

Terry
You can get THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS "SONS OF THE GOLDEN WEST" CD on www.amazom.com and you'll find us and Hag doing MAMA'S HUNGRY EYES. Ome of my fave compliments I ever recoeved was when Merle said " Man, you got that original acoustic guitar part dead right!. That's the glue to the whole song and not many people get it." Needless to say it was an early Christmas for me. Take careTerry John www.johnbeland.com

Great info & history lessons here,THANKS GUYS.
However,we may never know who played some of these parts. Is it possible that these guys may have played each others guitars from time to time? Post #55 shows Mr. JB playing one of Mr. Volkaert's Tele's. I am very certain that the last several times Terry Downs set-in with my band,He used one of my Tele's.If I know he's coming I will go out of my way have one strung up with his preferred gauges & even brands, but this is not always possible. What if right before the gig we notice this guitar has a problem, buzz, hum, rattle etc., we just grab another one & go. Think of it this way; they are in the studio, one with an acoustic, the other with a Tele. One guy steps out for any number of reasons??, before he returns someone picks up the abandoned guitar and lays down a track before the inspiration or "moment" is gone. Or one guy breaks a string and the other says "here pal, play this one".Maybe one is really digging the others tone or setup & wants to try it out. Just food for thought. These entries are truly musical treasures, thanks again. |

johnporter,
You are always way too kind, letting a hack like me come in and mess up your show. I think the last one was with Leroy Parnell, right? That was a great Tele of yours I played. You are so hospitable. Thank you. You bring up a good point. Nowadays, I come into the studio at night, and it's just the producer, engineer, and me. I don't even meet the artist 80% of the time. Sometimes they send me the finished product with a thank you note, or maybe a phone call. Back then, it was more of a group effort, with more than enough players. I bet we would be surprised how much that "grab and instrument and lay down a track" construct occurred.
