Are your guitars Multi-tasked or dedicated?
What I mean is, do you use your #1 for Blues, country, R&R, and ballads or does it serve one purpose while your 'other kids' are single purposed as well?
In my case, my Muddy can sing breathtaking Blues or can tear it up with country twang I play my standard Tele through my Boss chorus pedal for a jazzy lift while my '83 Tele'd neck Squier assumes the role of a wonderful acoustic through my Boss acoustic simulator. I know and appreciate their limitations, strengths and weaknesses and have so placed them as dedicated noodling tools. That's not to say they are not well rounded in their own right to jam out with but they seem so sweet and content in their currently assigned roles.. 8) |

Dedicated
The Tele plays all the fretted stuff.
The Strat is used for slide. The Baritone is used for both, but not many songs for either. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

My Tele does all the studio work for my band's recordings and many side projects I do in studios. I also use it almost exclusively for my daily practicing at home.
My Godin LGX-SA sees only studio work at this point, whenever humbuckers are called for. My Fat Tex Spec Strat does almost all the live work with my current band. While I love this guitar, its comfort and its many great tones, I actually would rather use only the Tele live too. I just rely too heavily on the humbucker in the Strat for my soloing--like a crutch--and I'm tryin' to slowly wean myself. Sorry--just sharin' pc

It Varies
both my 52RI and my Legacy work for almost anything I'm playing. Just seems though that certain songs call for nothing but the Tele. I started in the band I'm in using a Tele, traded it for the Legacy, then added another Tele. When the second Tele was brought back in the guys said that they hadn't realozed it before, but they had missed the Tele sound. I agreed and am once again complete :D

My MIA Nashville
Covers the ground between Don Rich and Black Sabbath pretty darn well, so I use it for everything unless I break a string....
for the purists among us...you're right, three pickup teles do sacrifice a little snap and pop...(I don't know why, but after some A/B testing with regular two pickup teles, I had to admit it's true, the bottom isn't as tight and focused) ...but it's still got plenty O' twang, and the neck pickup sings like a bird on bluesy stuff...not as dark and muddy as other teles I have owned...the strat pickup is good for pseudo-acoustic stuff...of course, all said and done, I spend most of my time playing with the bridge pickup...I like to bite through the mix no matter what kind of music I'm playing...

Very specific
My Tele is for all my electric guitar stuff, my Larrivee handles the acoustic stuff, and my P-Bass covers the bass work very well! :D
Back when I actually HAD more than one electric, I used my Gretsch for more atmospheric stuff (gotta love a Bigsby!). But generally, even when I have more than one guitar at a gig, I tend to start and finish with whatever I happen to have hanging on the strap! Cheers, Tim |

My guitars are very specific
I play my tele for blues.
I play my sheraton for blues. I play my sheraton when I'm practicing my singing so I don't have to plug in. I play my tele for everything else. I play my sheraton for everything else when the strings on the tele are starting to get cruddy. |

I just pick one
Since I don't play professionally, it doesn't matter. I end up playing music that fits the guitar though. If I plan on doing a bit of recording or spesific stuff, I have an idea of which tele fits the purpose best. So I gues they are a bit specialised. Not to a given type of music, though. More to the sound I am after.
And then I have the acoustic and the strat for when they are appropriate. Don't play the strat much though. Usually have to go search for it in my kids rooms... Geir :)

i have 3 guitars. a tele, a les paul, and a p90 hamer (like LP special). if i were recording, i'd likely usit the axes for the song or song part. but for playing i figure that each can cover every song and i grab whatever is calling me that day.
they all sound great crunching though a marshall jmp 1/2 stack. |

I have three teles currently, which one comes to the gig depends on which one I pick up on the way out the door. It's usually my #1 but they all see action. I use my teles for everything from blues, to country, to rock, pop, swingy jazzy stuff, but no matter what it is I don't carry more than 1 guitar to a gig or to the studio unless I need an acoustic also. Multi-tasking? Definitely. With as many different types of gigs as I do, I could not justify owning a "one trick pony".

I tend to be able to use any guitar for any style I like, be it my Strats, my LP, or my Tele. While I can certainly get away with bringing one guitar with me anywhere and pulling off any song my band has ever performed, I do have a preference for different guitars on different songs. Call it the future rock star in me. :) Gotta switch up on stage.

My brand new 52RI does it all. Since I got it, I haven't even been taking a backup guitar to the gigs. We play blues mostly, but since we're playing local bars, I have to please the crowd somewhat. So, we'll occasionally throw in a little Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, not to mention a little Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard on the side. The Tele does it all with no problem. :D

Dead-eye-kated
It's the only way I can rationalize owning so many guitars! :-) But actually, I consider myself very lucky to own so many nice instruments. And I do use them for gigs.
I have two "do-it-all" axes, a Relic Nocaster w/3 Bardens, and a G&L ASAT Z-3 Semi-hollow. (And actually a third one if you count the G&L Comanche.) The Relic or the Z are the first choice for country gigs, the Comanche might take first place for a "rock" gig (if I had any like that). Straight ahead jazz gigs get played on a Guild Artist Award. Backup jazz axe is also a great blues axe, a Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion -- although a recently acquired Schecter PT Custom would fill those functions well, also. Country/rock/blues bass gigs are handled by a G&L L-2000, with jazz bass gigs played on a fretless Godin Acoustibass. I wish I could say those were my only guitars and basses, but there are a few other G.A.S.-induced instruments hanging around the house as well. Wanna talk dedicated amps? Quick, somebody drop a hat... :-\ CS |

Definitely multi-task
I set each one up to play it's best for me but each one has it's own sense of purpose, each one asks me to play differently.
LP = rock/blues Strat = rock Tele = anything and everything! #1 J.R.

Everything I play, I play on my Tele, blues, country, R & B, jazz.
I have a 1970 Les Paul Deluxe that I use as a back-up, or if I want to feel like Larry Carlton. Otherwise it's tele all the way. Anymore than 2 knobs and I get confused.
