I have played THE REAL THING!!!
My girlfriend and I visited Stockholm a few days ago and I had to seek up all the guitar/music shops in our capitol city. I went to a place called Halkanīs Music to ask for directions to another store called Vintage Guitars (http://www.vintage-guitars.se). The guy in the store (who looked like a young Keith Richards by the way...) told me that "Vintage Guitars" had closed doen and was only found on the internet. I was just about to leave the store when an old beat up tele caught my eye, hanging there on the wall. It had a note that said "1950 Broadcaster. Price: ASK!" I thought to myself: "Wow, thatīs one of them Relics Iīve heard about, but never seen in real-life!" I asked the guy if I could play it. He said:
- Sure! But be careful, please! - Of course! I said. Can I play it through that old Fender Twin there in the corner? - Yeah! It sounds great through that amp! What kind of pick do you use? - A Fender heavy or anything like it.. He handed me a white Fender Heavy pick and I started fooling around with the Relic. After a while he came up to me and said. -You know thatīs the original Fender Broadcaster, dont you? - Isnīt it a relic? I asked. - No way man! Itīs the real thing! An original Fender Broadcaster from 1950! he replied. I couldnīt belive it! It was such an amazing thrill to play the original Tele! The one I have heard so much about but never, ever had the opportunity to play. It felt GREAT! Of course, it felt old and not very easy to play but it REALLY felt vintage! It was like finding the holy grail!!! The guy told me that the guitar had belonged to a countryguitarist from New Mexico that was active in the 50īs. He didnīt knew his name. I asked how much he wanted for it and he said: 160,000 Crowns (22,400 US dollars)... I told him I had to think about it He he! Wouldnīt that be something?! At least, I have played the REAL thing!

At $22kUS, that is a pretty good price. I recently saw a mid-50's Tele go for $35kUS. Perhaps worth re-considering?

So it's still there!
It's a small world! I played that very same Broadcaster last summer. I was in Halkan's shop looking around and he brought the Broadcaster and a '52 Esquire out from the back. They were both sweet guitars, but I liked the Broadcaster best. |

I was working. As sound recordist on a film crew, we were doing some filming for a Japanese TV company. On a previous visit to Stockholm, I had noted where some guitar shops were, and on this occasion, I had a Saturday morning off and I made my way over to them.
I didn't buy anything, of course, but I appeciated the attention I was given in Halkans. Also the chance to play a guitar that dreams are made of! |

Ah, so there's a refin '51 Nocaster there. That's on his for sale list. I got the impression that the Broadcaster ( if it was it that I played) wasn't for sale. I did ask him the value and he said $35,000, maybe up to $50,000.
I put it down carefully! |

Halkan is the man! And that guy you are talking about that is Stevie! I know em both. It sure is a small world we live in. Halkan builds some really cool guitars by the way. And that story sounds correct. I know Halkan flys over here and buys up a lot of old US guitars. Like the Swede's do with our old vintage automobiles. I was in Falun Sweden in May and I saw so many cool American cars there! The Swede's are lovely people and "Jag Elska Sverige"!! Sa Myket! |
