What Rice Guitars has in store for me

I wanted to share this. The attention to my input and the professional guidance of Rich Rice is unparalled. If you are in the market for a custom or semi-custom guitar, they are worth a hard look.

Hey now... those wire hangers don't grow on trees, ya know...

Seriously, thanks for the nice words. Very much appreciated. This was (is) a refin with some serious additions in store for Odie's axe.

Hamer's shop was 3 blocks from here, closer than any gas stations... Boy, I miss going over there...

I visited the Hamer factory once, must have been in the early '80s. Talked to... who's the other guy? Not Paul Hamer (who left by now), who politely told me that I should be building my own necks, and wouldn't let me see the factory. Said it wasn't that interesting (or something to that effect).

+1 based on my experience. Congrats, knowing the Rice Clan it will be a beauty. Keep posting the pix so we can all see that gitbox taking shape.

Here is one of the pix Rich just sent me of mine - its coming together.

I live near the Rices and so I have seen and played several of their guitars. The problem I have is that I want to take every single one of them home with me. Each one of them is a work of art. It is like seeing a Monet painting, where you go, oh yeah, it would be incredible to have that one, and that one, and that one... I suppose part of the allure is their reasonable price; since I know could afford any ONE of their guitars, I find myself drooling over all of them. Well, not quite all. Rich likes those Bigsby things, and I am too simple a player for that--I got to learn the notes before I get around to shakin' them up like that....

Great pix, and I have to say Odieman, I see an old man's face in that back shot, with his nose facing into the center of the guitar, above his long gray beard.... (maybe not an old man; maybe its just a Hippie)

Gorgeous

Gotta say, that is one elegant guitar. An early congrats. Is that the same finish Rich used on the B-Guard? It really is beautiful. What neck shape did you decide on?

As far as I can figure there are three of us who will be playing Rice Customs in the near future - you, me and Beach (not sure if he has received his creamsicle delight yet).

Well, I have learned over time that deeper profiles and the 1 5/8" nut work best for me. This is after several necks in the .88 - .94 that did not work too well. Therefore, I went with the 1" club that Rich shapes near the headstock to fit better. It is a two piece body with pretty stock-style hardware.

And I do believe it is the same finish as his blackguards.

You got me drooling, man!

The finish is a little more towards the natural side of things, but still basically the same Copal color.

I named the color Copal. Although there aren't any insect inclusions. ;)

Alrighty then, I thought it was a direct, scientific reference; as are many of your responses. I ordered those outlaw saddles based on some past posts of yours, is that still your pref?

I have a small stash of them not on guitars...My own guitars have been sitting in pieces neglected for a few months while I work on everybody else's. The only "together" tele I have is my '78 with the 70's saddles.

I like the outlaw saddles. I like the brass ones, I like the twang set, I like the stainless steel saddles. No problems with Dale or his saddles.

I've been with the same girl for 5 years. I met her my first day of college, we sat next to each other in music theory.

That's sweet. All kidding about relationships aside; married men live longer. Or at least the days seem longer. Just a joke, put that rock up.

Congrats on the 5 years, she obviously knows and appreciates you, best wishes.

odiemann - great looking piece - has a look all over it that just says "excellence and elegance" about the guitar - a real sweet piece ! So I guess the race is on between odie, zomby, and myself as to whose guitar is finished first - last I saw of the "Beachcaster" it was hanging from the tree at the Rice household fighting off the local birds attempts to "relic" it for me - I don't think Rich and Chris are going to let on as to which one will be finished first - I'm sure we'll all know by the "proud parent" pictures and posts once we receive them - I've been shopping for accessories for the "Beachcaster" ( new strap, new cables, etc,) and Mrs. Beach likens it to an expectant parent buying baby clothes and goodies before the baby is born. I can't begin to express what a great experience this has been with the Rice's and the "Beachcaster" is the culmination of over 40 years worth of playing and over 40 years of "drooling" at other peoples custom guitars. I have/had some nice guitars in my lifetime, but I don't think anything will compare to the "Beachcaster" once it arrives.( Except the fact that it might be equaled by odies and zomby's pieces ! But they really don't count because they're built backwards ( right-handed)

ps - A + E Special - "The Early Years of Rice Guitars"

"so Beach, what was it like knowing that you had purchased a soon to be "classic" from the Rice clan? And are you at all surprised that they've grown to become one of the finest manufacturers of "custom Teles" in the United States?"

I'm very happy for all of you lightweights. Wait until the girl you married becomes the lady you are married to... We passed our 30 year mark this year, and still like each other--- how cool is that?

The whole trick is respect and fun. The rest of the baggage goes away, but (mercifully) in the end, there is always your best friend. That doesn't mean that you can't be an independent person, but my wife makes up for my shortcomings, OR SO SHE TELLS ME...

Yeah

Having fun is a key and being yourself, I think. Maybe I should ask her about that, just joking. I am way better off married than not. My life is much fuller and balanced, not joking.

Being married tends to round a fellow out..

I've been experimenting with a new way to shave off a few unneccesary pounds

But there is a veritable smorGASbord just the same...
