A happy ending to my sad story of marriage, g.a.s. and telecasters
Howdy all.
Thanks for all that great feedback on my previous thread. Especially the jewelry idea and taking the grief idea. I happened to wear my new Fender baseball cap yesterday, thinking my wife wouldn't notice a new hat. Wrong. "New hat? Did you go to the guitar store?" I was holding a camera at the time, so I put it to my face. She can read my face. "Yes" I said. Brief pause. "Did you buy another guitar?" "No," I lied. But I'm a crappy liar. We've been married 11 years and I've never once been able to pull the wool over her eyes when she's asked me a straight question. So I said "No" knowing that she would hear it as "Yes". "You bought a telecaster didn't you." Now that sort of stopped me in my tracks. I had know idea she knew ANY of the models that Fender makes. "Wellp... yeah... well... I..." stammered me. "You did, didn't you." I snap a picture of The Look to save for posterity. Maybe to teach my daughters how to form it properly, though I suspect it's a genetic trait that comes naturally to the females of our species.Thousands of years ago, a caveman was coming back after a long day out with the boys carrying a new club. You know, the fancy model with binding around the handle and a spike sticking out the end. His cavewoman took one look and said, "New club? Again?!?" followed by some inarticulate grunting and muttering, and then.... The Look. It's been passed on over the generations since. So the happy part is that I can now keep my new baby out of her case and play her at will. Oh Happy Days!!! And all it cost me was a ten minute clubbing with The Look...and a pair of diamond earrings! |

Is The Look similar in effect to that most harrowing of retorts: "I'm not cross, I'm disappointed"? Mine kills me with that one every time. Still, at least you get to play the tele! I 'casually' told my missus that I was going to buy a new tele "in a few months or so". She didn't seem overly upset so I did the decent thing and bought one the next day.

Nurture feeds nature
Ed,
Being a "card-carrying" expert in the field of genetics, I'll chime in on some of your astute points. Oh yes, "The Look" is in fact genetically determined by having two X chromosomes <joke>, however, it's not all nature here -- nurture is in fact a big player as well. By your daughters learning the behavior associated with "The Look" (and any desired effect) they will be able to "express" the genes responsible for the manifestation of "The Look", therefore being more skillful at it. Seriously, there is a on-going controversy in genetics with regards to nature vs. nurture and we will likely discover that nurture does biochemically impact nature (genetics/genes) but these hard experiments to do. All in all, that's a beautiful tele -- no price too big. Cheers, Carl

You folks are too funny.
I figure she just knows me. For a Vasser grad, she's not the most technology sophisticated gal on the planet. I had to show her how to move files from one folder to another the other day (Right click? You mean I can click left or right?) You know. Maybe we really do create our own reality. Maybe I WANTED her to find out so I could start taking my lumps and actually PLAY the dang twang thang! |

I am Jyrki and I have G.A.S. And I have not bought anything guitar-related in 64 days. (Do a hear a chorus of "Hi, Jyrki!"?)
Gr8tfulEd, I am glad the tele worked out. Recently, and many times before, I have thought that acquiring music gear really is the only thing that gets in the way of me and my spouse. There are no financial problems but the pang of guilt always comes when you have decided on a purchase. A couple of weeks ago I went to look at an amp that had just the tone I was looking for, but decided to pass on that one this time, and I have been glad about that. Maybe I am getting over G.A.S.! Famous last words: "Because you gotta have one!" (My 70's Roland RE-201 tape echo) "I'm gonna trade my green Strat!" (My G&L ASAT Hollowbody) "I'm selling my Twin Amp!" (The same) "I just sold my Charvel Surfcaster!" (The same) "Matti (the luthier) just dropped by!" (My new Flying Finn sunburst with snakeskin 'guard) "This is not really available ANYWHERE!" (My Am. vintage Thinline '72 reissue) ...and on and on... I just recently hid a 4x10 cabinet at the back of my combos. It's black and has no logo so it blends in really well. Pedals come and go, rack gear can be just added into the rack unnoticed, pickup upgrades are invisible. And when you actually end up making money on a trade you can casually bring that up. Never talk about your losses. Jyrki |
