Ladies and gentlemen - let me present.......

for the first time on YouTube :
Roy Buchanan with Mundell Lowe's Orchestra performs Erroll Garner's "Misty" !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZekMi...roy%20buchanan

As I've said in an earlier thread about Roy, this is an all time high. It's from the WNET TV-doc "Introducing the world's greatest unknown guitarist" (1971).

Jazz pianist Errol Garner, who watched the program, told a friend that this was the best rendition of "Misty" he had heard - besides his own !

This shows Roy from a totally different side, but still the jazz tune benefits from his blues and country background.

It was done in ONE take, and it proves beyond doubt that Roy mastered the art of improvising over advanced jazz chords.

No flashy technique here, just a soulful and purely musical rendition.

Notice the expression on Mundell's face as he watches Roy's playing - says more than a thousand words.

And what a band !

And the sound of Roy's '53 Tele "Nancy" !!!

Did anybody see those fingernails? I'm a fingernail player too, but it's not everyday you see a guy play with a good 3/8 inch of nail past the fingertip:

Very true, impressive technique indeed, I just meant he wasn't flashy in his usual manner. He really quiets down and never lets the melody out of sight.

No more jazz lovers ?

I would have thought there were more jazz lovers among you guys ?

I mean, if you like jazzguitar playing and also love Telecasters, it would be real hard NOT to love this one IMHO.

Personally, I'd have loved it if Roy had recorded a whole album of jazz standards. He certainly was capable of doing it !

Wow, that was just amazing. Pure Tele tone and a fantastic playing style. I could watch that video night after night.

Very nice tone and refreshing to see someone putting it to use on a jazz standard, complete with plenty of bent notes (I played a jazz gig with my brother once and was under strict instructions: no bending!).

Roy was the reason I got my 1st Tele. All I knew was that he used a Tele though, so I bought one, not realizing that what I was buying was completely different than what he was using!

Yeah, the guy had some real claws! He could give himself head wounds scratching his noggin.

Cool video Telemarkman. Some of the playing on his first few albums had plenty of Jazz flavor, but none of it was backed by a band like that.

Eric Clapton during his Cream days had pretty long nails as well...
