My opinion of Mexican Tele

I just came from a jam session. It is the first time I have played out in years. I took my 1978 Tele and my new Mexican Tele.. I was playing through a hod rod deluxe. My 78 squeeled like crazy any time I bent over the amp to adjust anything. Also whenever I tried to use the drive channel it squeeled like crazy...I then plugged in my new mexican tele........What a difference....that thing sounded fantastic and when using the drive channel I was completely blown away with the tone and the lack of feedback...I am sold on these new Tele's....my 78 does play a little better but the sound and the feedback really dissapoint me............

You might have a microphonic pickup. You could replace the pickup outright for pretty cheap or possibly have it repotted to get it back on its feet. Should be golden after that!

I agree. Don't dump the '78 - fix it. I used to judge the whole guitar on the merits of the pups. I have sold a few that could have been greatly improved upon with new pups.

I just recently acquired a MIM Standard Strat from a Pawn Shop for $150. (Mint by the way!) I'm still in the process of forming an opinion of the guitar. I have to say that based on playing it, looking it over, feeling it and just getting to know it in general, I'm very inclined to like it and think of it as a good Fender with a degree of quality. I don't have an American made Fender of any kind but I have played plenty of them over the past 30 years. My Tele is MIJ and I don't feel it is less quality than an MIA. Subsequently, I don't think the MIM is much less in quality to the MIJ. I know it is less quality or it wouldn't cost 25% of what a top of the line Strat would cost. But I've gigged with it and so far I feel like I got a great buy on a good guitar. I've no doubt that changing the pickups would even make it better, which is something I plan on doing soon.

Plus the thrill of owning a good guitar that you scored a really good deal on makes it even more fun to own and play.

I remember reading of a "blind" car test a few years ago, where brand new vehicles fromseveral manufacturers had their badges and other identifiers removed, before being tested.

The Skoda Octavia won.

Now, how about doing the same thing with guitars?

My guess is that nobody would dare. for fear of the "wrong" ones in the pecking order coming out best.
