Hello, and a question.

Hi Everybody,
I just joined your forum after weeks of lurking around(stalking?). Everyone seems well informed, and friendly.
Now that I've said hello, I'll move on to the question portion of this post. I purchased a new 2006 MIM Telecaster in April and am now experiencing a buzz on the low E string at the second fret. This buzz was not there when I bought the guitar, and I'm wondering if any of you might have some advice as to what may be causing this. Do I need to have the neck adjusted, or is there something else that I should be looking for. It's pretty bad, so any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
C

Greetings.

It could be any number of things, but it's most likely to be something simple like you need new strings, or a minor adjustment. However, if you study the frets closely, and can see a fault, then take the guitar back to be fixed under warranty.

Hi There, and welcome to the forum !

It sounds like your truss rod may need slackening a fraction of a turn, or the fret may have lifted a little. Either way (as Chickenpicker already mentioned) get it done under warranty and get them to set it up/check it up. These are not major problems, but best fixed for free !

A good set up and fret dress (even if the later has to be paid for) is always a good idea, as it prepares the guitar for a lifetime of playing a lot nicer.

Just one last thing, have you put lighter strings on since buying it ?

Hey Howdy Canuckcaster, welcome to a big brotherhood (and sisterhood too) of Telecaster fans!

Sounds like the third fret is high, or the action too low.

Drove through Calgary on the way to the Highway To The Sun a few years back.
Nice city!
Went to a guitar store across and down from our hotel that had some Fenders. Maybe that's where you bought it?

I'd like to guess that it's just a matter of adjusting the trussrod, but like SteveY says, a fret might be high. I've never seen a Fender fret that came unseated, but if the guitar has never been set up really well, the frets might not be very level, and a change in weather might be exagerating a problem you've always had, and didn't know about.

If you know a good guitar tech in your area, he might be able to make it into a much better player.

Thanks for all the replies folks. For those of you who suggested new strings, I just put a new set on the other day(same size as new).I thought it might solve the problem, but it didn't. Is it a big deal to adjust the truss rod at home(just allen wrenches, right?), or should I leave it to the professionals? I don't want to make the problem worse. The neck looks pretty straight to me, and I don't have any problems anywhere else.

As I said, thanks again for the help, and the welcome,

Canuck

P.S. SteveY, I bought the guitar from a chain in town called Guitarworks. There isn't a hotel anywhere near the shop I bought it at, but they have a few stores in the city. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Calgary.

Hello from a fellow Calgarian!

Technically, I'm just outside of Calgary, but close enough.....

Anyway, sounds fairly minor - most likely a combination of saddle height adjustment and truss rod adjustment needed.
It's pretty easy to do this type of adjustment yourself. There are usually some instructions and specs on relief settings that come with your new guitar.

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, take it down to Jim Mozell. He runs the guitar tech shop at Axe music just off Blackfoot. He's probably one of the best, if not THE best guitar tech in Calgary. I'd trust my axe with him anyday.

It's pretty common for guitars to slip out of adjustment when they are placed in a different location which has different temperatures and humidities.

I can even help you out to set that up if you'd like.

Cheers,

Shawn

Hello Shawn,
I went in to the Axe music that you're talking about. They had the best prices in town, and were very friendly. I probably would have bought the guitar there, if they had any Mexi Teles in stock. I'm working around the corner from there right now. I guess I'll have to drop in one of these days. I also have an Epi that needs some love, so maybe I can swing a deal. Thanks for the tip.
Take it easy,
C
