Farewell '52 Reissue, and hello '86 Squier Strat, I am redeemed.
Let my '52 RI go last night. I traded it off for an '86 Squier Strat and a more recent MIM P-Bass.
Before y'all start throwing rotten eggs at me, listen to me.... My buddy hit some hard times and I traded him a case of beer for the pawn ticket. $450 later I had a '52 RI. We had a gentlemens agreement that he could later on buy it back for $750 (I had to sell a few things at a loss to free the '52) and we'd be square. I took some jeers and scoldings on this page for this when it happened, some felt like I should have helped him out instead of benefit from his misfortune. Well, he's been doing okay. He got a job that was gonna pay him $10,000 for 6 weeks to go do some construction down in New Orleans. So he quit his job, downsized his posessions, and headed for Louisiana. Well, upon arriving in Louisianna he ran into a problem. In the buildings he was working on there was a ton of mold & mildew that triggered disasterous alergic problems that he had not had since childhood. In addition to that, he discovered an alergy to Oak sawdust (my father in law has the same affliction). After some time in the E.R. and an expensive hospital stay, he's back up in Kansas City, sleeping on couches. He's got another cruddy job, he's getting slowly re-established, he's got nothing but his clothes, his car, an Epi Casino, Ampeg Reverbrocket, and MIM P-Bass. His brother-in-Law gave him an '86 MIJ Squier Strat (long history on this one, I bought it 12 years ago, traded it to him 10 years ago, he traded it to his brother in law, I've lamented the trade ever since and have been angling to get it back). Since his return he's been insistant that he's still gonna get the '52 RI back. So I offered him a trade. The Squier and P-Bass for the '52 RI. The '52 RI is worth more than the Squier & P-Bass, but I've got less invested in the '52 RI. Add to that, I like my MIJ '69 thinline better anyway and I've been after that Squier forever. In the end, everybody was happy, except the other guitarist in my band who really liked the way the '52 RI sounded and looked. I couldnt keep that '52 RI forever. It was the one of the last guitars that Jim Strom of Midwestern Music, and the Saddlemen, sold before he died. And he sold it to my friend Wally. For that reason, Wally always wanted to have it in his stable. |

I totaly agree with you. I had a 52 RI and it was nothing to write home about.
I swapped it even for a Green Quilt Peavey EVH Archtop after 3 months. In the long run the 86 Squire is going to be a highly sought after guitar...actually they already are. Where as the 52 RI's are a dime a dozen and simply swamp the guitar market...good move. |

Gimme another day or two on pics, I'm not done horse trading, that P-bass might not end up in my stable...
Dollar value on these two guitars don't mean much to me. They both have character, look good and sound great. The Squier is one of those nice ones from the '80s, depite the crazy trem. |

As swamped as the market is with the 52 RI, they don't seem to come down too much in price. I played around with one. And though they may not be anything to write home about, there's just nothing else like it in the same price range. Outside of a Custom Shop guitar, isn't this the only way to get that neck profile?

I still like the Teles that are coming from out of the country more than the '52 Reissues, to me they're way overpriced and to add insult to injury I think the pricing of The Imports is way too high too.
I mean c'mon it's a frikkin' PLANK not some archtop. I think those Custom Shop NoCasters have a true value of about 750 bucks so put that in Your pipe and smoke it. It's a good sounding plank - but it's still a plank.

I agree 100%. Anyone with a little woodworking skills can build a tele pretty quickly. And it *is* a plank. I understand we're paying for American labor vs. overseas labor. But man is it expensive.
On the other side of the coin, a new standard Les Paul, no frills will cost about as much as a custom shop Fender. So in a twisted sense I guess there's balance in the universe. have you seen some of those custom shop LPs? 6,000 for standard production custom shop LPs. ...6,000 will buy you two limited edition fender CS guitars.

At the price you guys pay for the 52Ri which appears to be about $US1200-1300 street they are an absolute bargain. Seeing as I made Warpdrive an offer on a used 2003 they had on ebay with an $1100 BIN which they declined, no-one is budging much on price. And it would cost me another $165 to get here in Oz. If I'd bought it, the Australia-North America Free Trade Agreement at least means I no longer pay 20-25% import tax.
That's the flipside of the high purchase price and demand, a high resale. Yes, you could build one and I have that's pretty close - but come resale no-one cares if it's not the 'real deal'. There's precious few on ebay or elsewhere's and dealers are asking not far off new prices for s/h. I guess that's what happens with no planned obsolescence. MSRP, price here is $US3000, and discounted best I've seen is $US2300. If that seems rich, a Les Paul Standard is $4000. Studios come in at $2200. As for resales, I'd back the 52 in any day against a PV, no offence. Anyway sorry for thread hijack.

Before this thread gets taken over by the "US made vs. Foerign made" discussions, or "dollar value" talk, let me just say that dollar value had very little to do with this whole deal.
In fact, the P-bass is no longer in my possesion as of about three hours ago. I never even plugged it in. I traded it to the bassist in my band for his 6 string alvarez bass that also used to be mine. I traded it to him for his 6 string banjo months ago and regretted it ever since. But I didnt care because he was a guitar player who had been playing bass in our band for over a year. He'd been complaining about the fact that he only used the middle four strings, but being a bassist, never had the money to go out and buy a 4 string bass. Problem solved. Sure, I could have sold the P-bass for more than enough to buy a better 6 string bass than an Alvarez, but this way everyone is happier again. The stars have aligned for a second day in a row. |

Whenever I buy something from a private party I make sure that they understand that they will always have the right of first refusal if I decide to sell it later. I try to make the same arrangement when I sell something. It is important to keep the stars in alignment. |
