You mean the black tape-looking stuff along the top edge of the body? It looks like it's to make the sharp bound edge a little more comfortable when playing. It's a bit puffy, like he stuffed some kind of padding in there.

Looks like he's trying to bring some of the contour advantages from the strat over to the tele...

Myself, that's why I love the tele...hard-nosed approach, lol.

Then again, who am I to tell JF how to play/outfit his Fenders?

I was gonna say the same thing about the 'strat' roundedness. His arms have been through a bit, the skin may be sensitive still, and this could add as a protectant to it. He played a late sixties blond tele at last years "All Tomorrow's Parties Festival," and it didn't have the covering on the side. Best to ask him, or Dave Lee.

i don't really get what u guys mean by trying to get the contour feel. Isn't putting the black sponge just increasing the height?

Sometimes that edge feels like a knife. Looks like he decided to do something about it.

I hate to admit it, but most of the guitars I've had with binding on the body, I've taken a single edged razor blade, and shaved the binding a little rounder where my arm rests on it. It feels better that way.

I can understand that bandaged thing, but I'm not crazy about how it looks. It does look more comfortable though.

Looks like crap. But he obviously isn't worried about resale. Must be so nice to buy a guitar and not care one bit about how it looks. Just that it plays the way you want it to.

Every guitar I've ever had.

What's the point of owning a guitar, if it's uncomfortable to play? IMO, whatever it takes to make it a player.
