Funny, that's what attracted me to the Hwy 1 (that and the excellent value). I went for a Honey Blonde with a maple neck. Absolutely love it. Love how it relics naturally.

fender created that guitar to compete with gibson's faded seris, which had a sanded down stained finish. hence the different acrylic laquer on highway 1's
this is also the finish used on the neck, which IMO makes a better neck finish than nitro |

Yeah, they come with rosewood boards but I have never seen one in person. I would actually like to have one of the 'banana pudding' color highway 1 Teles with a rosewood board. I have probably seen/played over 50 Hwy Teles over the past couple of years and I have never found a rosewood board model.

I've got a Hwy-1 Honey Blonde with a rosewood board my wife bought me last year for my 40th b-day. I've kept it stock so far except for one of those black leather pickguards from El Dorado. Looks tough. I think its a pretty good guitar the way it is. Of course tweaking some things here and there probably wouldn't hurt. I'm trying to convince myself into putting a Parson-White B-Bender in it. Maybe if someone else convinces me....should I pull the trigger and do it?

If I was going to go with rosewood, I'd probably opt for a sunburst body. with a black pickguard installed.

Twang
I played a Hwy 1 this past weekend at Guitar Center -- first time I'd tried one with the Greasebucket tone control. I was suprised by the amount of twang that it produced. It had MUCH more twang than my Am Std. To me, it seemed less versatile than my Am Std, but really nailed the hot country sound. If they had had the crimson in stock, I probably would have brought it home.
Question... what gives the Hwy 1 that sound? Is it the 3-saddle bridge? The pickups? The Greasebucket circuit? Has anyone else noticed this? |

Yeah, the tonal differences are probably due to the vintage bridge on the Highway 1. I noticed the same thing when I A/B'd a Hwy1 and an Am Standard. The Standard was a little 'plain' sounding but the Hwy sounded killer....really twangy through a 59' RI Bassman.

do you think the blonde acrylic finish will age as well as the nitro???.
thats been on my mind latley cause ive been really wanting that relic'd look with the tinted neck. im prepared to let it relic itself and get the authentic vintage look, if the finishes permit it |

What's a greasebucket?
Good question. It's what they're calling the new tone control circuit in the hwy 1. The marketing info says it "rolls off the highs without adding bass." Sounds like they added a low pass filter.
Does anyone know exactly how it's different from the standard tone control? |

I picked up a Texas Hwy 1 about a week ago and it also has the greasebucket control circuit. The only reference point I have is my MIM Tele. To be honest I can't tell any noticeable difference....

On the Greasebucket thing, you can see the changes in wiring/parts if you download Fender's diagrams, here:
Wiring diagrams A capacitor and resistor were added in 2005. I have an 02 Highway 1 Strat and love it, but I haven't compared it to a Greasebucket-wired version. The .1 cap does make for a pretty dramatic tone control, though. |

Hi I just signed up yesturday. I'm an English guy living in Taiwan. I bought my highway about nine months ago, blonde/ maple fingerboard. It is an absolute fantastic player! I too tried an american but found the highway had much more twang to it. Again I put this down to the 3 saddle bridge.
