Your latest tele project

Hey, lets see your latest tele project, if you have one. Heres mine, a partscaster made of a bunch of parts I've been collecting: MIM Nashville body, Allparts TMNF-FAT neck. Planning to do a Nashville tele, I haven't had a tele with a middle pickup in a few years, and have been gassing for one. Pups will be Rio Tallboy neck, Duncan SSL-1 strat in middle, and an old Duncan Broadcaster styl;e rewind in the bridge. All hooked up to a megaswitch, to retain the neck/bridge tele position that I like so much. If, like before, the nashville setup gets old, than I'll probably take out the middle pup and do a Clarence, like this (without the bender, thats what fingers are for) : BTW, that long bridgeplate and saddle screws look funny IMO.

I agree that that Glendale "vintage" style bridge looks a little funny. That's the first straight on picture I've seen. It really doesn't look that vintage. $150 and that's what you get? I think drilling the body and using a real vintage style bridge is the way to go............. or just leave the American bridge.

I don't have one at the moment, but I have one planned for the future.

BB Squier Custom 2 with Gibson P90's and electrics and a MIM 72 Thinline neck with "F" Tuners. Should be pretty sweet. Hoping to get that geared up some time in the near future.

I will post some pictures when I am done with it, but I am pretty poor at the moment.

Partscaster. One piece swamp ash body. Warmoth vintage modern neck w/ SS6105 frets. Original Vintage pickups. Three saddle compensated bridge. Gonna finish it in Reranch Butterscotch Blonde. Been waiting on a 1-ply 5 hole blackguard for a few months now (back-ordered from Fender)

A picture of the body is attached.

Here's one I have planned, concept visual courtesy Kisekae:

Now that Tony De Lacugo has his shop moved, and up and running again, I'll probably have him paint the body in turquoise sparkle.

Please keep in mind that it would be the correct pickguard and that it would be a Thinline neck.

Swamp ash body from Warmoth, satine (bloodwood) unfinished neck, kingwood fretboard, Callaham bridge, and Hamel pickups (actually, it now has Bardens, but I don't have an updated photo)

Apart from the trem, that looks almost exactly like my AmSeries tele. Great taste in guitars Joel.

My current project:

Warmoth alder body - will be finished natural, either with Danish oil or a thin coat of lacquer

white pearl Warmoth Tele Hybrid pickguard

Warmoth tele neck, maple w/ rosewood fretboard, 1-3/4" nut-width (the sole reason why I'm building these - I've got thick fingers and hate narrow necks...), Graphtech nut, 6105 stainless steel frets, 10-16" compound radius.

- Warmoth still needs a few more weeks to finish that one, that's why I don't have picks yet - I do already have all the hardware, though:

Bigsby B50

Wilkinson EZ-Lock tuners
Wilkinson vintage bridge w/ 3 compensated brass saddles - both from GFS

Nashville-style reversed control plate

Fender 4-way switch

LeoSounds MudCat pickups

I will post pics once I've got it completed!

Surf Green Tele (finally)

I just finished 15 coats of nitro Saturday. I'm now waiting for it to harden a week or so before flat sanding and polishing.

Got a couple started here. The big one is started as a swamp ash body blank from Guitar Mill. I plan to do it in clear orange with maple binding. Can't help it I like that clear orange. The little one will replace the masonite body on a Rogue mini I'm redoing. It started as a 2x4 I bought at Home Depot.

Terry ............looks like you're off to a great start there.

Thanks jwells. I wish you all the best with your new projects.

BTW, how long do you usually wait between the last nitro coat and flat sanding? It seems like there are varied recommendations.

On my last project ......... the RickenTelebacker ... I waited about a week. I also hung it outside in the sun during the day. I think it depends somewhat on your climate and humidity. I've spent a little time on the ReRanch forum and some of those guys say wait a month and two months is better. I think that's a little ridiculous. Someone there said Gibson waits two months ........ If that were true they have hundreds ...... maybe thousands of guitars waiting for polishing. Maybe someone here has information on that.

When you start to flat sand, don't mix P type paper with non-P type paper. There are charts comparing the different grading systems. The point is if you mix papers, you may think you're going to a finer grit when you're actually going to a courser grit. I use a plastic soda bottle cap for a sanding block. These days I start with 800 and go up to 1500. Then I polish with 3M Finess It II.

Edit:
Here's a link to a chart showing the two sandpaper grading systems.

Awesome color! I have wanted a Strat and a Tele in that color for the longest time! Someday.

I hang out at ReRanch, too, Terry, and I'm with J. If I wait a month or two it's because I'm busy, or lazy, or don't really look forward to the wet-sanding process. I think that down in Garland where it's pretty dry, you should be able to start sanding after a week or two (BTW, if I'm not mistaken, Bill Lester, the Reranch man, is your neighbor - do you know him?)

With 15 coats of nitro, though, you probably want to baby that beauty for a few months, because it will be pretty soft as it cures, and I have dents, ruts, nooks and crannies in the clearcoats of some of my guitars to prove my point.

I just pulled-together a neat one, using a nice, lightweight Nash body I picked up from Marc Helberg here on the TDPRI.
  • Ash body w/ lightly reliced butterscotch nitro finish
  • Allparts maple skunk stripe neck, 9-1/2" radius, w/ 6105s
  • Duncan Broadcaster bridge pickup
  • One of Pete Biltoff's Vintage Vibe Charlie Christian pickups in the neck.

Outstanding! (Especially the CC pickup!!!)

I think I will swap the neck out for a beefier one (I have a big USACG neck, just waiting to be installed), and I also think I'm going to have Pete wind me a new bridge pickup. The Broadcaster sounds downright anemic, compared to the CC pickup.

Been without a Tele for a while now, having had to sell my Lentz a while back to pay bills. It's great to be playing a Tele again!

my tele...

Started with an Ash blank I planed and jointed in shop class. I made a template out of my MIM tele and bought some routing templates off of ebay.

Bought the parts and sprayed it in reranch Lake Placid Blue. Lot of coats of Nitro clear.

This is my first one . . . MiJ mild sparkle body, neck made for me in Devon (UK) but it has terrible backbow - it looks OK here but I've got shims in to make it playable - plus the twelfth fret needs replacing.

But I do like the neck flame so I'll sort it out!
