I guess he's been dead too long and now forgotten, but Terry Kath was a great Tele player, and my all around favorite guitarist.

Boy, I hope not... just reading his name I started playing the beginning to Beginnings.... (see, I wasn't too corny and started playing 25 or 6 to 4)

Suicide is always a puzzler and too tragic.

Terry Kath was indeed awesome. What a tragic end to such a creative force. I loved his playing. Chicago was never the same without him.

This list is subject to change without notice....

1. Jim Campilongo
2. Roy Buchanan
3. Danny Gatton
4. Don Rich
5. Jeff Beck (whenever he plays one)

I've heard some stuff of Peter Green playing a Tele in the early 80's and he was just KILLER! He still had it going on even at that late stage in his career.

5 Who didn't ever play one?

I had trouble thinking of 5 guitar players I liked who didn't
ever play a Telecaster or an Esquire

I bet even Les Paul probably played one as some point.

Jimmy Bryant

It is clear to me that many of you aren't hip to him.Get thee to a record store (or online might be your best bet) and get a Jimmy Bryant/ Speedy West CD. Jaw dropping amazing.

Jimmy is another fave, but I'm a little burnt out on him right now, since I just spent about six months with nothing but Jimmy/Speedy in the car CD player! None of it rubbed off either.

From what I've read, it wasn't so much suicide as a really stupid accident; he was high and playing Russian Roulette.

I always associated Terry Kath more with SGs than Teles but it's nice to know he played both my favorite kinds of guitar. I never was much able to get into Chicago once Terry was gone.

Two More Rarely Ever Mentioned Here...

Eddie Hinton (Very Extremely Dangerous; Letters From Mississippi)
Hugh Cornwell (Great solos in 'Walk On By' and 'Golden Brown' and the entire Rattus IV album).

Hard

While I love the Stranglers and the Clash, Hugh and Joe (for that matter Chrissy) just are on a different list. They played Teles and reinvinted rock, they aren't the kind of Tele players that Gatton, Prince, Vince Gill, Redd V., and Ted Greene were/are.

All that said, I'd listen J. Honeyman Scott play the intro to Kid all night without a complaint.

Late Additions

1. Keith Richards
2. Rich Robinson
3. Steve Cropper
4. James Burton
5. Don Rich

To my list above I have to add:

6. Bruce Springsteen
7. Danny Gatton

I know that makes 7, but I have to do it! I can't put them in order, either, other than for me, Keith is tops!

If it's gotta be only five then I'll go for (in no particular order)

James Burton

Steve Cropper

Keith Richards

Albert Lee

and as nobody else has mentioned him,

Dave Edmunds (He's played a 52RI with a Hipshot almost exclusively for the last couple of decades)

and then if you're mentioning Dai you've got to mention that other great Cardiff tele player,

Micky Gee

Hmm, six already!!

Of course Bruce Springsteen and Joe Strummer should get honourable mentions and it's a terrible thing to leave guys like Bryant and Buchanan out too. BTW good to see Wilko Johnson mentioned and also James Honeyman Scott (although I'd never really associated him with teles until this point). I can remember Jimmy from Buzz Music in Hereford before he got his call-up to the Pretenders.

Roy Nichols
Clarence White
Dave Gleason
Alex Minoff (Weird War)
Graham Coxon

Admittedly, I've only seen Alex play a Tele in WW's video for "Mental Poisoning", but he's an amazing guitarist. Graham Coxon gets down with a '52 RI.

In chronological order:

1. Jimmy Bryant
2. James Burton
3. Steve Cropper
4. Roy Buchanan
5. Danny Gatton

There are other players of equal skill, but these are the 5 Tele players that define Tele playing, IMO

Nobody's mentioned him yet and I know this makes 6 for me, but this thread wouldn't be complete without Dave Davies of the Kinks.

1,2,3 - The Hellecasters - My favorite band.
4 - Roy Buchanan - The master.
5 - Danny Gatton - I'll never forget learning "Funky Mama" and showing up for band practice with it. The guys I play with are metalheads that just don't get it...
