Sum thin tew think about

Now The post below got me thinkin bout stuff again(lew-kout!!)

In a post by Jupiter Beach
http://www.tdpri.com/viewtopic.php?t=6291
J.B. wassa gonna go buy a TELECASTER mebby and sum folks done giff sum good skinny but here iss sum more stuff ta think about whilst yer lookin roun.

Shown below are three TELECASTER pickups. They are not vintage but there iss a hoe buncha difference in tone betwixt these three.

The hard part iss tellin the difference whilst their inna TELECASTER.

From the top look fer real shinny poles that look chrome. They are, sortta. Their iss no mag-a-nute inna poles. The mag-na-tiz-zem is produced by a bar mag-a-nute shown inna third pix.

The second one hass mag-a-nute-tick-poles but they are extended above the top surface and the big thang is the metal backing plate iss not mag-a-nute-tick. It is brass or copper.

The third one has flush poles and a taller coil with a copper covered plate that is mag-a-nute-tick as are pickups of old.

These are factors tew cornsider whence buyin a new TELECASTER. Cheeeep is good but when shortcuts are taken tone kin sumtimes suffer and yew haff ta go buy yer seff sum Cee-More Drunkins er sumthin.

Few haff any comment I'd lika hear it.

Yes, the last one (on yer rite) sounds much more TELECASTER tew me.

#edit---- My bad HEE! HEE!

stands to reason...

Since the originals had alnico poles, and a zinc or copper plated steel baseplate (magnetic) that pickups constructed in a vintage (Tele) fashion would sound more "Tele."

One of my first learning experiences was with a Schecter "Tele" with dual (soapbar) humbuckers. Just couldn't get that twang. Split the coils, no twang. Full HB, sounded fat, little twang. Finally put a SC pickup in with the correct slant, and voila, the sound I wanted to hear. That slant makes a big difference as well. And I always thought that the American Std. or American series Teles just sounded bland and neutered because of the modern bridge and lack of a metal baseplate. Cheers, bt

Is that last one on the right what I can expect to find on a 52RI? Are the stock PU's on those fine as is? After dropping that kinda dough, I'd hate to think that I'd hafta get a PU makeover.

Once again...

You have shown an amazing apptitude to be absolutely right. I love you man. I have exp. with all three of those designs, (and some others) and agree thew hole-heartedly. IMO, the problem some folks run into, is that they never compare the models outside of the music store/living room/basement etc. and see for themselves what can happen at stage volumes with a jumpin' band. I'll be the first one to say, in isolated situations, at low to moderate volumes, those other PUPS can be just fine. But if you want true Tele sound, and you have discriminating ears, there is no substitute for the real thing. On the other hand, if I was the kind of player who had a "real" job, or was "retired from gigging", or didn't still dream of growing up to be a rockstar, I would probably save some gettus, play an import with stock PUPS, and be very happy.

Jake

P.S.- Upon re-reading what I just typed, I can see where some folks might find it abrasive. I meant no disrespect to anyone. My wife, as well as myself, often wish I was a "living room" player. Guess it just wasn't my lot in life.

Squiers?

Are all those pups from Squiers? At least the middle one with three holes on the top looks just like the one I bought unseen as a 1980 Tele pup. The seller didn't know anything of Teles and he bought it back from me.

Hey Trag, just pull the trigger on the '52RI. They have the US Vintage pickups in them, which sound quite good. I've put them in a couple of guitars. They pretty much nail the Tele sound, and are versatile. Those are great guitars right off the shop floor. Cheers, bt

What make is the one in the middle?

The one with 3 holes in the top. A friend of mine has a pup with 3 holes in it like that and it sounds just fantastic in his 72 Tele.

I think the middle PUP is MIM. My drummer has an old MIM top loader tele with what looks like the same PUP in it.

OH MY !!!

Folks I dent mean tew start no cont-tro-verse-cee on iss subject of tone.

Alst I know is I haff tested so many and tried so many that I kant member which one iss which inna tone-quest.

My parts bin iss loaded with stuff and I never mark which one came from watt I jes know that the one I put in sounds better than the one I took out or else-wise I'd stick it back in.

My point on iss thread waz tew show that the cheaper -made ones mite not be the bess ones but after my experience a few months ago with the Squier Affinity I kant say nuttin bout final tone. That one at that time sounded as good or better than all the rest on that day threw that amp.

WHEW!! did I dodge a bullet yet?

I'll jes say this about the subject of pole vs bar Mag-a-nutes. I played a bass that I played fer years that waz made in Viet Nam. Lam Hoa dent haff no ALNICO nuttin so he jes broke up a speaker Mag-a-nute and put a piece of it unner the coils. I made a lotta getus and played that bass fer many years never knowin watt it looked like inside.

I jes dent know or care (check kout the haff mag-a-nute twixt the P/Us!!!)
..
YES!! I waz doin soul music and jazz in 67.
Don't chew be laffin at my blouse and ascott!!!!

I own a '98 CIJ Fender '50s Telecaster that has a bridge pup that looks like #1, and it has a non magnetic brass/copper plate glued to the bottom of the ceramic bar magnet. The pole pieces are non magnetic steel rods, with a chrome look. The sound of the pup is kind of sharp, and unimpressive. :(
It looks like there is glue on the bottom of the bar magnet in picture #1, so I thought maybe it was the same kind of pup...

Fewer holes

My CIJ pup doesn't have the 3 big holes in the middle of the plate. Other than that it looks the same. Sorry, I don't have a digicam...
