Ebay Tele Score!

I just won an ebay auction for a MIM 72 RI Tele Custom in sunburst with maple neck for $310.

The description was poor, so I think very few people even saw it, or they shyed away from the EMG's. There's a stock version of the same guitar for sale on ebay now that's going for over $500!

I can use the EMG bridge pickup in a different guitar that I am assembling (Tele bridge/SA single coil middle/EMG 58 humbucker neck). I'll sell the other EMG humbucker along with a spare EMG 85 I have in my parts drawer. I have a RI Wide Range Humbucker for the neck that I got from Angela Instruments a while back when they were selling them for $50, and I'll use either a Duncan Broadcaster, Rio Grande Tallboy, or Dimarzio Virtual T in the bridge.

I guess I'll also need to replace the pots with 250k and 1Meg for the bridge and neck respectively.

I'm excited about this one!

congrats...

i was just thinking today how it is starting to seem like there arent anymore good deals around on ebay anymore. i guess there was at least 1!

The good deals are still there. They have just become harder to find among all the dealer advertising.

Any way to cut down on the size of the pickguard?? Man that hides alot of the burst-especially near the selector switch.

You're lucky I didn't spy that, you'd have had someone bidding against you...and I don't even want a Custom RI. I have pickups lying about ready to go in that so for that price I would've developed an itchy index finger.

Nice score.

If you want to get a pickguard cut that will fit that bucker, track down Terrapin Guitar in Oregon. He cut me one that fit perfectly, down to each screw hole, and looks great. Got it right away.

Once you get those pups out that will be awesome - the only thing left in my Tele list as a custom like that - funnily I want an Ibanez version - my first electric in 1973 and boy do I wish I'd kept it!

Here's a MIJ 72 Custom RI listed by a pawn shop on ebay. The seller says the neck is bowed a bit, but a truss rod adjustment may be all that's necessary.

Looks like a nice one. It even comes with the bridge cover and HSC.

I believe that your eBay Tele is a Crafted in Japen '62 Telecaster Custom Reissue. Year of manufacture would be somewhere between 2002 and 2004. Pickups would be USA Texas Specials. Body would be Alder.

Good luck if you bid on it. It should be a wonderful Tele.

It looks like it already has the correct original pickguard for that Tele. The reissue Wide Range HumBucker that AndyGio has should fit just right in that pickguard. And if you

take a look at the routs Fender has for the pots, selector switch, all in between those and the pickups, and the holes left by the original pickguard screws; how else would you design a pickguard for that Tele, to cover less?

If you wanted the functionality of that Tele pickup configuration but a pickguard covering less of the Tele body, then you might as well start with a more standard Tele body and do something like this (just an edited photo here)...

Or have someone like Warmoth make one for some hybrid of those two.

But I'd love this '72 Custom style for what it is, big pickguard and all.

AndyGio, that is a real nice score and a beautiful Tele, I've love to see some pics and more info when you get it and put it back with its WRHB neck and a good single coil bridge.
