Maybe if I had that, people would think I really am SRV!

There's a website where you can order the stickers and relicing templates for making a SRV copy. Might be a fun project but I don't think I'd want someone comparing my playing to Stevie's.

SRV RELIC

That guitar looks exactly like Stevie's...well, if stevie wore oribital sanders for a shirt and his skin was a paint chipper.

So many people seem to relic their guitars so poorly. Years of rubbing with a shirt sleeve, skin, or sweat leaves a very distinct wear patter. it usually does not involve a noticeable lip where the finish ends and the bare wood shows. Oh well.

My brother took his Tele relic and very tastefully reliced it a bit more. used an orbital buffer (not sander) and then took coffee grounds and rubbed them into the wood for a "dirty" look. It actually looks awesome.

I have seen Fender release some really heavy relic jobs on strats. With the upper bout down to bare wood by quite a bit. When done right (Fender always does it right) it really looks nice. When done wrong it looks like that SRV from above.

I must admit I now own a "reliced" strat. Painted it, got impatient and didn't coat/wait/coat properly, buffed it with an auto buffer and it buffed right through. Looks like a bad relic attempt. I'm ordering more Fiesta Red from Reranch to fix my blunder.

Funny stuff

I've got no objection to relic guitars, but....

Does he think this looks at all like natural wear?

The hysterical thing about that link is the guy insists a nitro finish is key to SRV's tone! So you want me to pay a premium for applying a nitro finish AND for flogging it off with a belt sander? If anything, SRV's guitars are a great argument against the finish having Jack Schlitz to do with a guitars tone. One of these days I want to record some clips of a nitro finish guitar, and then strip it and finish it with quick drying cement, record the same clips, and post the results.

Heres one from the Fender Custom Shop

Heres
a CS Jeff Beck Esquire now on eBay. Dunno, doesn't look that authentic either IMHO. YMMV. $15K?? I think not!

John Cruz of the Fender Custom shop built 100 copies of the SRV Number 1. There's one currently on Ebay. Here's a picture. A little pricey. I wonder what they sold for originally.

..........................................

Custom Shop Number 1

You'd think he would use the correct "SRV" stickers after going through the effort of duplicating the relicing.

Here's the one done by the svrguitar.com guy.

..........................................

I think he did a good job. The stickers you buy from srvguitar.com look more authentic.

Yikes....

I personally don't like the "relicing" thing but I've got nothing against it. Some people do a very nice job but this isn't one of those...

I appreciate good "art"

antiquing a piece of wood to look old is an art.
Furniture restorations, wood floors, guitars..
GVCG, MJTele, and Gibson Murphey aged guitars are "art" to me.

Making a MIM strat look like it hit a DA sander isn't..
When I was 22 (1992) I bought a standard MIJ tele in pearl white.
I grew tired with the color quickly, and tried to strip it. ended up a GAWD awful brown tobacco color. I played it at a blues jam one night, and people were trying to buy, my "old" tele. I did finally sell it at a profit of $50 bucks for the "kick ass refin".

The Cruz/Fender Custom Shop guitar is what Stevie's #1 looked like at the time of his death. Stevie changed out the letters shortly before he died, so the "srvguitar.com" guy is using the more photographed, more recognizable letters and Cruz's replicas look like #1 looks now.

Even assuming someone did a perfect job of making SRV-style relic'ed guitars, why would someone want that? I'm not knocking it, I just honestly don't know. Are there that many Steve Ray Vaughan tribute bands out there that need artist-correct guitars?

To me, thats more relic than I can appreciate. I like gracefully aged a lot more than totally trashed. Not to mention that SRV played a bunch of other Strats that sounded as good and looked a whole lot better. Like you are gonna buy Stevie's tone if you have such an axe! Ridiculous.

This is what happens when you don't wipe it down and put it back in its case.

I may be wierd...

but I actually like the way a well maintained guitar with it's finish mostly intact looks compared to one that is all chipped up. Always comes down to personal taste. I want my guitar to look old when it's just that....OLD.

neck wear

Anyone got any idea how they make maple fingerboards look worn in that “special” way. I've got an old Tokai thats worn, you can definatly tell the difference between a relic and a properly used, old guitar.

Anyone seen Eddie Shaver's 55 Strat? now that looks used!

This thread is based on "relic" as it applies to taking a new guitar and modifying it so that appears
to be old.
There is no legitimate association to the past IMO in taking a new guitar and artificially aging it.

Yes there is obviously a market for this practice but IMO:
relic guitar=phony guitar
