1st Session with new AllParts neck
I was asked to guest on a CD by the band Woodbelly in San Antonio last weekend. Great band with an amazing lead singer. They asked me to play Tele BBender, so I got a chance to try out my Tele with the new AllParts Fat neck for the first time on a session, and it performed unbelievable. What a difference. Played like my old Ricky Nelson Tele, thanks to the work of Rich Rice.
If your into getting the feel of an old, very old, Tele..I reccomend getting one of the AllParts fat necks. It made all the difference in the world. Hope you get a chance to catch Woodbelly if they play in your town. These guys do it all...Regge, jazz, rock, and yes, country. Fantastic band who Im sure you're going to hear more about. I believe their website is www.woodbelly.com JB www.johnbeland.com

Good deal. Thanks.
I like AllParts stuff more and more. My skinny MIJ Tele neck could be a candidate for a fat AllParts replacement (to go with the CS Nocaster pu's). I think the bodie's ash under all the glop. |

Nice John, glad it works good for you.
Here's John's guitar, for your viewing pleasure: ![]() ![]() Did you see the latest one we did? This one isn't an Allparts neck, it's even thicker with no truss rod. The camera flash washed out the fingerboard, it isn't that light. ![]() Chris Rice http://www.ricecustomguitars.com

It isn't moving anywhere. At 1.05" thick and quartersawn...
This thing has a punch that I haven't heard before. Combined with Don Mare 2324 pickups, great sound, full clear and punchy, yet still bright and twangy. Just think of every positive adjective you've described a guitar's tone with and they all apply to this instrument. 8)

best sounding Tele I ever did
The best sounding Tele I ever did was one with the Allparts Fat Neck on a very light Ash body and Barden pups... I had a hard time shipping that rascal out....
I have done 2 others with thinner necks that didn't come close... just amazing balance and tone, the articulation was incredible. Ron Kirn |

ALLPARTS NECK
The fat neck/light body combo has always worked well on my partscasters. The latest one is a 2 piece poplar hollow tele with a throw away grade 1/4" maple top. I made it a year or so ago as a test run for thinline routing templates i made.Last week i stuck an ALLPARTS TMNF-FAT tele neck on it and wired it up with a set of O.C. DUFF's ,oh baby what a combo. The sound is fat and round with perfect string to string balance.I think i might try out the idea i had to make a GHOST TELE knockoff out of it.

I provided John with a TMO-FAT neck, the unfinished AP necks come with a sealer on them. I stripped it, reshaped it, rolled the edges, dressed the frets, smoothed and rounded the fret ends, and applied aniline dyes, nitro lacquer, and a few other ingredients. Then added the wear and caused the nitro to fail in strategic spots. It's not about causing damage, it's more like applying a distressed finish while paying close attention to where the natural wear should occur over years of careful use.

Cool!
Thanks for the report, John. Nice to know when something turns out as good or better than your expectations.
Chris & Rich obviously go the extra distance to add some touches that make things come together. Nice work, guys! But man......... no I know the seed has been planted and I'm gonna end up with one of those Fat necks on yet another tele someday. |

hmmmmm....... another question......
the AllParts site says the TMO-Fat necks come unfinished but you guys said they have a sealer on them. Does this mean that the neck could concievably be used without atually putting a finish on it? Any potential problems down the line with that, or do you recommend some type of additional finish??
I realize you needed to strip John's to apply the aged look, but would the sealer itself be enough to hold up over the years???? Nab doggit! I'm gonna be pondering this stuff in my head now, I can just tell......... |

The difference between being able to play it and not
The filler is a clear sanding filler. It doesn't really protect the wood much.
A neck really needs to be sealed with at least a couple of coats of a clear coat, if for no other reason to keep the atmospheric humidity from making it swell and shrink through the seasons of the year. If you have a precision setup, that would be the difference between being able to play it and not. Ron Kirn |

I don't know how long it would last, but the "unfinished" AP necks are definitely sealed with *something*. My guess is it is a stabilizer to keep them sealed on the trip over here from Japan. They ship by boat, and if it was raw wood, the transit would kill them before they got here.
USACG will send a raw neck, and it accepts stains/dyes as only completely raw wood will. AllParts will accept tints too evenly to be raw wood, and since acetone doesn't strip the coating my guess would be some type of very thin polyester coating. I'd still put something over it...

Fat neck, light body...
ok, the analogy with a beautiful woman fails with my subject line, but the Chris and Rich Rice Blackguard tele I just bought, with the fat Musikraft neck and light ash body (the guitar weighs about 6.5 lbs. and is the one discussed in this thread), has the best sound I have ever heard from a guitar. From reading this thread, it sounds like the fat neck/light body is a magical combo for teles. I guess this is the idea of the Nocaster as well. I reviewed their (now my) beautiful guitar here at tdpri.

I got an unfinished Allparts neck a while back and it was only the fingerboard that was sealed. Someone on th TDPRI thought it was "nelsonite", which I hadn't heard of (limited info on the web, too). I ended up scraping it off. Alot of work. Your's really came out nice.

Nelsonite is the stuff Musikraft uses to seal their necks. It's different from the sealer on the AllParts necks. AllParts necks are sealed with something tougher than Nelsonite.
