62 Fender Custom Tele ?
Hey,i have a question about the pup's in my (japanese) 62 custom tele. What was the actual real pup's put in the real 62 custom like? I'm so far not diggin these texas spl's,maybe it's the steel saddle's?,or me being used to the Fralin's in my partscaster(cause they kick the TX-spl's --s..
Would brass saddles settle it down a little more or possibly a capacitor change is needed.I just got this guitar because of it's reputation for build quality and it is a sweet looking sunburst with the cream binding, and damn fine neck.I'm hoping this isn't it's period correct tone and setup. :? As usual thanxs in advance for any feedback. 8) |

I had the same feeling when I got my CIJ 62 Reissue (mine is CAR). It's the Tex Special pickups. They are way to thick sounding (result of overwound specs) if you like a traditional Tele sound. Don't bother changing anything with the guitar except toss out those Tex Specials and throw in some vintage style Lollars, Fralins or Duncans (no overwound models) and you'll be in Tele heaven. I put a pair of stock Fralins in mine and it plays and sounds every bit as good as the $2300 Fender AV 62 Reissues. And I agree, the construction, fit and finish of the CIJ Tele 62 Reissues is incredible. It's those dopey overwound US pickups that are the problem. Unless you want your Tele to sound like a Gibson humbucker equiped guitar, loose the Tex Specials.

A real 62 would have underwound AlNiCo 5's in them.. versus your overwound A5's... It may or may not have had steel saddles (threaded or not)..
Your research would probably quite rewarding on the subject...

I have '62 RI in sunburst too. Mine's a USA. I replaced the original saddles with a 6 saddle bridge. I was having intonation difficulties. I love the stock pickups, but recently purchased some new Bardens and will have them installed this week.
From what I gather the Fralins are great.

62 Fender Custom Tele ?
Hey guy's thanxs for validating the issue with the Tx-spl.crappy pup's in this 62 reissue. My plan from day one has been to put in the stock Fralin's.I don't have any intonating prob's with the 3-saddle steel bridges, but the switch to brass is being considered.Anybody have an idea for darkening the finish on this sweet playin neck?have heard about the KIWI brown polish idea but not sure if i want my hands turning an orangy brown or how lame the neck would look with it worn off in certain areas.
Any help would be terrific,Thanxs again to the 62 crew for the replies. 8) |

Have you tried adjusting the pickup height? I have read here and in other sites that when people adjust the Strat Texas Specials really low, they are very happy with them.
I can't say with certainty that this adjustment would work with your Tele, but it might be worth a try. Greg

A Voodoo TE60BL matched with a TEF and some Glendale brass saddles made mine come alive. Hate the Texas Specials in that guitar.
