TELE JAM PHOTOS May 20 2006 SF Bay Area Tele Jam
Here are a few pics of the players in action at our jam last Saturday. I regret that my viewfinder didn't find a few of us.
I'll take this opportunity to write a few comments about the jam (scroll down to hit the pics and skip the verbiage): The rhythm section on the stage worked out great, in terms of acoustics and good use of space. And, we had 4 mic's, 2 or 3 were on the floor with the pickers so players could just step up and sing or lead. Big thanks to Dan, a superb drummer, and so generous of him to play with us. Our privilege. And thank you Bob McLeod, for arranging the rhythm section and playing your own rusty self! The food! Ron's pot luck suggestion was brilliant, we had it all: smoked ribs, Popeye's chicken, tater salads, pasta salads, lasagna, pie, chili, soft drinks, $2.50 drinks at the cash bar...a 40 mile cycling ride the following morning burned most it off me, I hope! The gear! All those 70s Tele's! Blonds! A bigsby blond! I should've corraled 'em for a group shot. A BF Vibrolux and a '68 Tele (I think?). Nice Princeton and Princeton Reverb. Funny, no Deluxe Reverbs. A Line 6 modeling amp sounded darn good! A Traynor. Tweed Bassman. BF Super Reverb. A 12-string Ric that Chuck allowed me to play through my AC30 while singing Dead Flowers-sweet (the guitar/amp not the singing)! Amp rig I coveted the most: an outrageously clean brownface '62 Fender Super The revelation: how GOOD, I mean REAL GOOD, a $115 Squier 51 Special sounds through a Vox AC30 top boost. Made for one another! Surf's up! As we were packing up, several players were trading surf licks and chord progs...and an unplugged '63RI Reverb Unit was sitting there...a missed opportunity! Next time... A few words on loud from Mr. AC30: every jam, volume's an issue, even with modest power amps. Macro amps and Princetons alike, can cause a neighberhood feud, so a jam is an opportunity to run our toys harder and freer (and sweeter) than we can at home. I've been blown out at other jams by 22 watt Deluxe Reverbs. The key is dynamics, and knowing when to end the verse and pass the soloing to the next player. The more we go on the louder we get. BTW, this was not the loudest jam I've attended, and my ears weren't ringing afterwards (no ear plugs). Let's just work on it, OK? What a great time I had, and this was the catalyst I needed to start playing again, and with other players! Thanks Ron (Califiddler) for initiating the ideer to have a jam, thanks to ALL, and let's do it again soon! Finally, here are a few pics, please post names ![]() Brett Gregory (Moondoggie) on bass, Dan on drums and Bob McLeod on guitar ![]() Boo (Booman), proud owner and master of that coveted rig, wish you could hear wot I'm tokkin' bout WOOF! ![]() The tasteful and most excellent bluesman Scott Moore on his Tele Jr through a BF '67 Super Reverb ![]() A soulful moment with Ron Wolf ![]() Brick ![]() Glenn (Refret) ![]() Ron (Califiddler) leading us through a gospel classic! ![]() Let's do it again soon (and not let years slip by before we do!!!) Cheers! Mik

Oops!
Mik and I had arranged to do a coast to coast conference call between the Hudson Valley jam we had going on Saturday and his SF Area jam. Apparently we both forgOt in the excitment of what was going on. I'm glad to hear that the SF Jam went so well. The HV jam was also hit followed by a New Riders of the Purple Sage show, a night at my place, and Sunday Morning Coming Down with an acoustic jam right after breakfast.
I'd love to see more pictures and have more names put with the pictures you've already got here. Tell us more about your rhythm section, how a person(s) rotated in and out, and all the fine details. Did you keep track of what songs were played? Anything you have to share I'd love to see/read/hear. Thanks guys!!

Hey Califiddler
More than a bit off-topic, but I just got back from a 2 day trip up to Boston with my daughter's 7th grade class. On our tour the guide mentioned a few quotes from Boston's historic notables such as Ben Franklin. I told him about the one you have as your epilog and he had honestly never heard it! He loved it and was delighted to add it to his repetoire.

Congratulations on your successful Frisco jam. Fun, aren't they? I can relate to that brown Super setup. I recently joined that club - to the dismay of my Vibrolux Reverb lovin' friends (especially Hudson Valley Jam Empressario, Mike Rice) - but I just LOVE it. I sold my former #1 SFVR to help pay for it. Also had to get a Fender Reverb unit, of course. If you think about it, it's sort of the early 60's version of what would become the Vibroverb, then the Vibrolux Reverb.

That's me with the 62 Super/73 Tele and incredibly bald head. I got in a little bass time at the get go. I brought the Ampeg. Brick you did a fine job. I had gigged 4 sets Friday night in Belmont on bass and you gave me a chance to sit down and play my Tele. Loved hearing the stand-up Moon. Who was the cat w/ the Strat and Bassman? Nice chops.....and volume
Thanks to Mik and Calfid and all you folks for the good fun. Let's do it again. Nice Super Mitch. '60? Boo

Thanks Mik
Thats me on upright bass, hadn't played 'Elvira' for quite some time, ended up with blisters on me fingers after that, but it was good pain. Nice to play again. Been too busy with work and it was nice to get out and blow the dust off.
check your messages! Thanks again for all the setting up you and CF did. Brett

Hey Blue,
We played an annual Pre Bay to Breakers party off of Old County Rd. (Wherehouse) semi private gig. Them runners like to kick it up though. Usually hit Marvin Gardens?? after to sit in on a set but not this year. B

Booman's brown Super was indeed sounding awesome, and so was his playing. Same with Scott More only way, way louder. Everyone had some nice stuff really. I liked Refret's '68 I believe it was. Best setup on a guitar I've ever played. Can't remember who it was (anyone remember?) but someone had a Relic with a super fat neck I really liked too. Strats, a Jazz Master, Bassmen (is that plural for Bassman?) and lots more. Excellent get together, but next time fellas, lets have a 20 watt and under rule, huh? Either that or everyone bring their stacks. |

I'm good with a 20-watt rule. I just knew if I used my Deluxe, no one would hear me. I was right. But if the next jam has a 20-watt rule, I'm down with that. |
