Today - Live: AC/DC, Blue Rodeo, Rush, Guess Who, Stones
I hope Paul doesn't mind me mentioning this again. It's a really big deal here in Toronto, and a good opportunity for TDPRIers to see some great bands live on the internet. And there's got to be at least a few Telecasters on view. (Hmmm, I don't know that I'd want to be standing in a crowd of about 500,000 people, but it sure would be a hoot to play for them!)

So I guess you're not going? I'm hoping to catch as much of it as I can on TV - my wife's too pregnant for me to go!
One thing is still a mystery to me: how on earth did Sass Jordan get on the bill? |

If only Richard Manuel and Rick Danko were still alive...
it would be a perfect place for an original-member reunion of The Band! (Lump in my throat.) With Robbie Robertson playing a Telecaster, of course.

come on!!
Sass jordan is a decent singer, and I think would pair up really well with Jeff Healy. She had some great rockin tunes a few years ago in Canada.
BUT JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE! Good thing it;s at 6:00, gives a person time to eat and take a visit to the lavatory.... I think the Belushi/Ackroyd thing is an obvious attempt at reviving the blues brothers fame, but at least they aren't calling it the BB, and they got rid of John Goodman. It's probably not a dreadfully bad act, if they got 'the band' back together. Good for an opener.... g. |

And yes, I'm certain the Jim Belushi/Dan Ackroyd thing will be horrible - probably just as bad as all those company band Blues Brothers imitations at the company Christmas party. |

Wed: play with the Rolling Stones Friday: Motel Six in Oshawa BAHAAAHAAAHAAA ain't that the truth. Maybe she's Jeff healy's new singer.... I learned a song of hers for a band a couple months ago, high road easy i think. It was a kick A$$ song. much better than Justin Timberlake. I hear he got pelted with water bottles. He should not have been there. Maybe Angus ate him. All I can figure is they wanted some decent Canadian bands in there too, got a call back from Healy and Jordan, managed to get them to perform together, probably got paid very little, for an opportunity to get some exposure. g. |

Actually, I found out the story - Sass is managed by Donald K. Donald, who used to work with Stones Manager Michael Cohl. They worked a little deal where Sass's Greatest Hits came out the day before the concert. Hey, why not? Nothing like using the public purse to promote one of your "past it" acts. I really don't see it working.
I just hope it doesn't give people the impression that the Canadian music scene is so thin that they have to drag out Sass Jordan just to fill the CanCon quota. |

GLJ: I heard a similar story about Sass last night. But, my pals and I are still perplexed: "what hit(s)?"
As an aside, I was very disappointed that the webcast and tv broadcast were not "live", especially after the CBC led us to believe it would be so. But, all things considered, it was mighty enjoyable watching all those (fellow) geezers rock and roll. I thought AC/DC stole the show. Rush and the Guess Who played like they were in their prime. Those Isley's, man, what a tight band. The Stones: Mick and Charlie had a good night; Keith and Ron did not. My friends and I were a little stunned to hear all those sour notes early on - maybe it was a technical problem. And that Timberlake chap, I've got to hand it to him. He survived some abuse from the crowd, but came out with the best line after the show: "If I was an AC/DC fan, I wouldn't come to see me either!" Oh, and there were a few Tele's on display through Blue Rodeo, Guess Who and, of course, The Stones. |

Alex didn't play a Tele (at least in the parts they showed on TV), but the Stones had some interesting ones: Ron played a black double bound, and Keith played one with an aluminum body (I think) that had a pink headstock and fingerboard. It looks like Ron and Keith have been spending some time at the Fender Custom Shop (Ron also had an aluminum strat with his name inlaid on the fingerboard).

Missed the webcast
But Imust say, I was drug (dragged?) to an AC/DC show as a punk teen, kicking and screaming.
I was converted! It remains one of the most fun, rowdy, and loud perfromances I can remember. Those guys are pros at no frills, full throttle rock and rock, no pretense, no posing, no whining, no politics. I LOVED it. Want to see them again.

I was disappointed with CBC and Muchmore Music. Both had promos saying "see it all here", "live coverage", "tune in, we'll be there", etc.
I know there are many reasons they couldn't carry it live but both stations should have been more upfront. I thought we'd see more than tape delayed highlights (actually one or two songs from each act and a few from the Stones) I tuned in at nine, since that's when the Stones were scheduled to be on. I wonder who thought it would be great television to have on-air hosts tell us how exciting it was that the Stones have hit the stage and how they were really rocking the place... and not show the stage. I try to defend Canadian television, we are capable of good things but when they pull something like this... However, the many teles made it worthwhile.

I agree (and it seems most people do) that the coverage was horrible. I understand that CBC and MuchMoreMusic's hands were tied, but I think they should have been more upfront and more apologetic. Instead of pretending they wanted to air an inane interview with a screechy fan, they should have said "I know this sucks, but it's not our fault". It was pretty annoying to hear the Stones playing in the background while an inexcusably insufferable commentator was blathering away on the screen.
