Which tele for me?

Well guys, looks like i won't be able to get an '83 telecaster after all
The only 2 i can find right now are:
1) Wayy 2 expensive for me, but in excellent condition
2) Decent price (not cheap though) but sharp neck edges and rust and dings
So well, my dream of making a Jeff Buckley replica guitar is gone...
So now, i don't know what to get, I'm looking at american standard, japanese, G&L?
Guide me guys, all ive tried is mexican (not a big fan) and american std (mmm alright i guess... spent like 5 mins with it)

You may want to

....think about (maybe make a list) of what you want, what you don't want, whats negotiable etc.

Flatter radius? Narrow or fat frets? "Hot" pickups, or more traditional? Traditional tele style bridge configuration, or something like the G&L set up on their ASAT?

Humbuckers? Rosewood? Maple? For what style of music??

As for Mexican Teles, I personally like them but that's individual preference. Did you try the 50s or 60s Tele, or just one of the Standards, or something else?

    Patience

My advice is not to rush out an buy what you can afford or what is available to you today. Take your time, find the guitar you really want and do what you gotta do to get it. You might have to take some extra time to get the money together, but you'll have a guitar that you'll play and enjoy for years, and you won't be second guessing yourself.

Also, don't let other people decide what guitar you want. YOU make the choice. Get what YOU want not what some stranger on the internet tells you to get.

Recently I was looking for top-loaders for that same reason (Buckley.) You're right they're a little pricey...those that I've been able to even find. I DID go the route of the AmStd Natural and am more than happy with it left stock. If you're dead-set on a Buckley look-alike maybe the Squire mentioned above would work for you. Then again that puts you at buying a guitar without playing it first.

Really, what I wanted to say waaaas... :P If you do go though with it, be sure to get a Carvin bridge pup and a chrome pickguard complete with upside down "rude" sticker!!! His pickguard was some kinda 5 hole design, not the 8 holes you get from fender. Good luck and post pics if you ever do it.

About the carvin pickups, i dun think theyre carvin... at all!
the carvins are strat pickups so the holes are on the side :?
I've been looking around and i think they MIGHT be SD STK-T2b hot stack, but i dunno, it looks kinda different
Whatever it is, i think its the one on this guitar (the seller didnt reply to my email when i asked what it is )
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TELECASTER-MI...QQcmdZViewItem
scroll down and on one of the pictures you can see the changed bridge pickup...
Anyone have ANY idea of what this is?
