I'd love to get a copy of "the road" episode he played on as well... Dang, it was before I had DVR and I didn't think that it wouldn't run forever...

What a lineup! It's great that Vince was able to play with Danny, and Albert for that matter. All three played great on this one too. To me though Danny will always be the man.

After watching it it's not hard to see why so many worship Danny. He had a talent unlike most.

Also did enybody else think Albert's tone was sort of "empty"?

Gills tone was the best. I heard that the mic on Danny's amp wasn't working or working right.That might explain the thin tone. Once Albert got the EB guitar it was notch tone, which is fine and frankly a welcome contrast to the other 2 Tele's.
Btw Albert Lee's B-bender intro on "Keep Your Distance"(Patty Lovelace) is pretty killer.

As far as the "paid by the note" thing. I think when you're in Rome, ya just gotta, but I do know what you mean WickedGTR.

Marc O'Connor played well on that show, too

ACL notwthstanding, Danny never had good luck with his sound when on TV. I wonder if he was really loud in the studio and there was too much bleed into the booth or something? His mic wasn't on when he and Arlen Roth played the Conan O'Brien Show, either.

Was it Albert playing through that Dual Pro? (with a backup at the ready, looked like). I assume it wasn't Danny, becuse to get that much dirt he'd have been so loud Alberts ankles would've vaporized.

Albert is playing through his Musicman head. Danny is playing the Fenders. Are they Dual Pro's, or Vibrokings? Danny was using VK's on his '93 tours.

And yes, you can bet they were loud!

On closer inspection, I see 2 Vibrokings (one obviously a spare) and a smaller silverface Fender amp. That may be a SFVR, optimized for dirty sound, perhaps modded by Joe Barden with EL34's, and using the VK for clean. Danny liked that bi-amped, dirty/clean setup.

They spelled Danny's name wrong! - the nerve. I reluctantly agree that Vince had the slight edge IMHO. I really miss D.G. as I'm sure we all do.

You know, its a shame that somebody doesn't make an all instrumental record with these Tele masters--Vince, Albert, Hiland, Volgert, Mason, Paisley, etc. What they can do should be preserved forever. Vince is such a monster picker and so little of it shows up on his solo work.

Albert's Hearbreak Hill disc had he, Vince and Brad playing one instrumental--Luxury Liner--that was a blast to hear. I'd love to have an album or two with all of them ripping it up.

i agree. they all sounded tremendous. very cool clip. While Lee's tone wasn;t my bag, it certainly was a good choice for contrast like you said.

I could listen to those guys jam all day... I figure Albert Lee was one of the first guys to use that "out-of-phase" Straty sound in Country... Definitely has its place... But it doesn't cut like Vince's full-bodied, clean '53 Tele sound... Danny, bless his soul, has his Tele sounding a little too thin and fuzzy on this clip... So Vince wins the Tone contest on this one...

But questions of tone aside, these guys are three premier Country pickers and a pleasure to watch and listen to... Sure wish there was more of that show available...

as I remember reading, perhaps in the Danny Gatton book, Danny was told only to bring his guitar, and they would provide him a backline amp. When he arrived, he found that Vince and Albert had each brought their entire rigs with them, and Danny was playing through rented amps that he was not familiar with, and not terribly happy with. He resented the way he felt he was treated, both by the TV people and his management. Turned him sour on TV and Nashville for a while.

I think that was from the old TNN show "American Music Shop". It wasn't that long ago that you could see live music on cable that didn't feature the latest Flavor of the month. What a drag to see the garbage that CMT tries to pawn off as country. It's MTV with cowboy hats and people that drop their g's.

I really miss TNN. I'ts a drag that with 150 channels I can't see real live music like they used to show. They got niche programming for Fishermen, knitting, golf ect, but not music. That by no means is Danny Gatton at his best. Not a good tone, and he's mixed down too much.

That's the best Danny Gatton video I've ever seen- granted I haven't seen too many. I thought he sounded awesome and you could see Vince and Albert flashing the big smiles behind him. Great!

Yes, DG's tone was a bit off, but I just love his playing. Granted he was playing the melody of the song, but I've always felt his soloing was amazing, but still had wonderful melodic content.

VG's solo was mighty tasty. God I wish he would do more of that.

I also would love to see an instrumental album from country pickers like Gill, Lee, Paisley and the like. I hold out hope for Paisley to use his influence down the road. Gill's had his chance for years to kick off a project like that and doesn't seem interested.

Who knows, making money selling slick albums is likely very intoxicating.
