Muddy Waters pickguard swap?

I've considered taking the plain white guard off my Muddy Tele and putting a three ply or different color on it. But I see is a 9 holer, which is unique I believe. What's a good option without drilling holes in the guitar. Using a vintage style or........

If anyone has swapped theirs, I'd like to see colors used, I'm still on the fence, about going black guard, mint green etc etc.

I don't know about the holes but mint green on CAR looks great IMHO

White's a good color on that guitar actually. If that's a thin single layer pickguard, those are nice IMO because they give you more space between the strings and the pickguard.

I think that some places can duplicate your pickguard from a tracing, so it's no big deal getting a pickguard if you don't feel like drilling new holes in the body.

A stock 5 hole pickguard will fit the Muddy without drilling any extra holes. I imagine you can get one in 3 ply from one of the parts outfits - Warmoth, Allparts, etc.

Allparts has some worth looking at.

I haven't heard of an Allparts pickguard not fitting a Tele with holes in positions per the most-common US spec.

The widest range of color options there are 8-hole models, but at least they don't already have the neck pickup screw holes, which gives you more flexibility - you can stick with a body mounted neck pickup, or you can drill holes in the guard if you want to change it to mount the pickup to the guard instead.

Since the pickguard screw holes will be under any replacement pickguard you use, I wouldn't consider it a big deal to drill the 3 additional ones you would need for the standard 8-screw spec compared to the MW 9-hole spec.

In 5-hole types they have white or black in shiny or matte, white also in parchment, black also in bakelite, and then they have mirror and chrome.

But if you decide you specifically want to mount the pickup to the guard and you want to drill the three additional holes in the body for an 8-hole guard, then a Fender branded one made for an Am Std would be a reasonable choice.

Oddly enough mine came with a 3-ply mint green (8 hole) guard from the factory.
Blueblood is familiar with my story (PsychoFrancis on the FDP).
But anyway, it looks great. IMHO

As soon as I can get some pics I'll post them.

I put a black 5 hole pickguard, on mine. I like the black with the CAR, makes it look great, with the black knobs.

Personally, I am queasy about drilling the extra holes for the 8 hole pickguard. The stock 9 hole pickguard looks funny to me.

3 ply mint green with 8 holes
I did drill for the added holes

I also had threaded steel saddles that I've
replaced with the original brass and 60's
reissue knobs. I also have an ashtray cover.
It's a killer '63 reissue now.

The Callaham parchment guard is pretty nice, looks more vintage than the usual "refrigerator-white" pickguard. I gotta admit, a light mint green guard also looks good on the CAR/rosewood combo, but its gotta be very LIGHT. Too many of those replacement guards are way too green.

I have to agree with Guitarjonz here. A very, very light mint can work without making me think of Christmas time. I prefer the Callaham Parchment 1-ply, I did try an Allparts 3-ply parchment and it worked for me, but I liked the 1-ply better.

That’s my daughter Grace in the photo. She had just turned two when I took it.

I like the idea of ice cream. We have forum tee shirts and Blueblood has been
