Vince Gill Telecaster Tone

Hi,

Was watching a couple of DVD's of Vince Gill playing his
old white Tele through some effects pedals and a couple of Rivera Amps. The tone of his axe is fantastic and some
of the best I have ever heard. Does anyone have the scoop on Vince's Telecaster ? re. Pickups, Effects, and
how he is getting such a nice twang out of his rig?

I've only seen him back in the late '80s using that
same Tele through 2 SFTR with a digital reverb/delay
box. There was a slight delay (slap) on one and dry
on the other as best I could tell.
You are right about the sound he gets as it was
really fine and big.

I've seen him play through the twins, riviera and Dr. Z amps and he always sounds the same, I guess it is in the hands?
I'm not sure but I think his Tele is a '54 with the stock pup's.

It's Vince that does it. To get that sound, you have to be Vince Gill.

Sounds like he also uses a healthy does of compression.

Vince uses a Boss CS3 for his compression. Many folks don't like the CS3 but I do and it sure works for Vince.

At the risk of being called a heretic, my only complaint about Vince's tone is that occasionally it goes being compressed to downright squashed IMO. Still great tone I'll agree, but with some loss of dynamics.

If you want to hear great Vince Gill tone, Try to get ahold of Steve Wariner's "No more Mr nice guy" Vince plays that instrumental with Steve. Very "live " sounding and good pure CLEAN tone. IMHO He just nails it in the tune.

Vince just took delivery of two red Goodsell Super 17s. (FYI)

Duncan Donahue pickup...

From having one in the past, I think it'll help you get in his tonal ballpark - smooth top end with some compression, with a midrange that's not too dipped or overly pronounced.

Fwiw, I used to own a Rivera R55 as well as R30s, and they are dark voiced amps, and they have some inherent compression which makes em real smooth - too smooth infact, for my blues tone preference - but good for Vince tone 8)
