A COUPLE BURRITOS IN BASTROP

Just a reminder to any Austin and vicinity TDPRIers that fellow FBB alumni Larry Patton and I will be getting back together for one night only this Saturday, 7pm at Maxines Cafe, on Main Street in Bastrop. The show takes place at the end of Yesterfest, an anual town street celebration.
Maxine's is a small place but we're hoping to pack it tight and rock the roof till the cops bust the joint.
Larry and I will be joined by drummer Will Roberts, who worked with both Larry and I as part of Bobby Bare's band in the 80's. The three of us have worked as a trio off and on for nearly 15 years.
Larry is one of the great honky tonk singers ever, and has worked with tons of folks as well as writing songs for Carl Perkins and others. His website is www.larrypattonmusic.com
Lots of country rock, bbending and Texas blues. C'mon out if you're in the neighborhood.

My ears are still ringing, but I enjoyed every minute of it. John Beland on his Bender Tele and Les Paul Gibson, Will Roberts on drums and vocals and Larry Patton playing some of the grooviest bass line's I've ever heard and singing for three and one half straight hours with out a let up. I can't count the number of songs these guys cranked out and covered Johnny Cash the Eagle‘s, Hank Williams, George Jones, Buck Owens, Delbert McClinton, Merle Haggard and many, many others. It’s a shame this wasn’t captured on tape. Hard to believe these guys performed all this material without a set list or a sheet of lyrics. This was some of the best guitar playing I’ve ever witnessed and I’ve seen a lot of good ones here in Austin over the last 15 years.

I got John to sign my Black Guard book and had an awesome time. The food a Maxine’s in Bastrop was great (the chocolate pie – awesome), and I have to give props to the young man who was taking care of the customers, he was working as hard as the Band but not having as much fun. Most of the wait-staff was either standing around slack-jawed watching the Band or dancing in the Conga-line in and out of the Restaurant behind the Owner and patrons. One little girl about 7 years old was learning Go-Go moves from the “More-Mature” ladies that were dancing like it was Prom Night. All I want to know is when is the next reunion show. I want to be there and I hope it does not take another fifteen years to get these guys back in front of a crowd. If they do get together again, do yourself a favor and DON"T MISS IT!!

You said it, Mike... I can't believe they covered Delbert McClinton... Twice!

I'm sorry I missed so much (had the in-laws and a nephew in-tow, so arrived late, but left early to make-up for it)

I'm sorry too that I didn't get a chance to chat with John, Larry, and Will... but John's girlfriend was real nice - it's always great to say hi. John and the band sure got the natives restless, tho - if they had a full bar, they'da been dancin on the tables before long.

What a great time we had, and what a special treat to see my ol TDPRI buddies walk thru the door of Maxines. I can't recall a better time I have had in years (although my ears are still ringing).
Fellow Burrito Larry Patton and Will Roberts are my closest friends, and as you probably could tell by the smiles and laughter onstage, we love each other dearly, not to mention all the miles, all the countries and all the venues we three had covered in our time together.

3 and 1/2 hours passed by like the snap of a finger...It felt like the old days at the Palomino Club. The crowd was terrific and so kind.
I want to thank you guys for making the trip out to Bastrop. It personally meant alot to have you out there in the house. Just hope I didn't hit too many clams!
The 3 of us hope to do it again in Austin in the very near future...if they'll let us.
Thanks Guys. What a dang great night, eh?

It was great to see Bill Bores there as well. Bill, as you know, makes the BBenders. He did a great job for me at a very affordable price. I highly reccomend him.

By the way, it wasn't a Gibson Les Paul I played Saturday night. It was an Epiphone Les Paul. Not much difference in the sounds as much as the weight. It's a hell of alot lighter. I don't think I could have lasted 3 1/2 hours with a Gibson Les Paul.
It's a fun guitar to play for a couple numbers, but I prefer the Tele for most.

I would say we came close, Bud. I wish Jeff could have stayed around cause it really started heating up soon after he left.
In the begining, it was suggested we play out in the middle of Main Street, as it was a festival and alot of folks could see us. However, we prefered to play the little cafe of Maxine's and pack it with music lovers & fans and make it a jumpin Texas juke joint.
It turned out to be just that. My ears have finnally stopped ringing but the excitement of that night will not go away so easy.
We hope to play again in Austin in the near future.

Hi Anthony,
As chance would have it, my partner and I will be moving to Mt Vernon Illinois in the Fall. Geographically it puts me close to Nashville as well as Chicago. We also have kin in Mt Vernon, Effingham as well as Chicago, of course.

At the present we have no live gig plans for Chicago, but that doesn't mean something won't pop up. I will be up that way come Thanksgiving for a solo concert in my old hometown of Hometown, if all works out that way.
Best thing to do is check up on my website for updates. Just click on "news".
Hope to catch up with you as well. There are CDs available on my site if you're interested in hearing some of stuff Ive done solo...both instrumental and singer/songwriter.

Wow, John, that is quite coincidental. Thanks for the update. Good luck with the big move.

I will be sure to check out the CDs on your site and keep close tabs on the news section, too. The solo gig near Thanksgiving in Hometown sounds particularly interesting. Consider setting aside an afternoon during your visit for some lessons. You'd probably get a bunch of local guys interested. I'd reserve an hour or two with you, for sure!

It sounds like it was a really great time! Wish I could have been there. It's been many years since I've been in a Texas juke joint. If JB was playing with the Burritos back in '75, I did see him, however, when they played at the University of Houston.

Incidentally, that white Tele with the leather 'guard is nothing but beautiful! As a hat person myself, I also really dig the hat. I myself have a beatup old Panama I'll keep wearing till it falls apart.

If you ever make it to the Phoenix area, I'll try to catch the show.

And, GO SOX....the Red ones, that is.... 8)
