Check out my niece's Tele!!......

....Hey I think it's pretty cool. It's a new Squire Affinity top-loader. Nice and light (well, the body IS thinner!) and a good snug neck pocket. And I gotta say: the pickups sound dang good and the neck is a JOY to play!

So her dad (my bro-in-law) picked it up for her along with a Behringer sort of "modelling" amp (which by the way, again, sounded pretty nice! not sure you could hang in a band with it, but some useable sounds for sure).

So Annie loved the Tele right off the wall, but she's sort of a punkish-gothic type of girl (she's 16 by the way). She told me she liked it but "I wish it was a little more sinister..."

So I asked her if she trusted me with it, and she said some words that made me choke up a bit: "Sure Uncle Eek; you're the reason I took up guitar anyway"

So, I took off that septic-white pickguard and spray-painted it gloss black. She's in love now! Can't put it down.

Nothin like seeing a teenager with their first guitar.

*sigh*

Nice!

If I had started out like that, I'd be way cooler today. I wonder if any of my nieces need guitars...

    Uncle Eek....

could you please tell me how you painted the guitar? Maybe out of topic here, but it looks really good and I'm always trying to learn new things...
    Very nice work.

    Needs ....

a little roughing up and some silly stickers? I mean if it'll really be a punky axe - it's way too pristine.

Still - looks nice as is! For the rest of us, a Black-White-Black pickguard would be even cooler....but I understand you gotta make it appeal to her.

    good choice

My first Tele, was also at the age of 16- also a black Squier with a white pickguard. AND I did the same thing, only I replaced it with the 3 ply black/white/black pickguard. Unfortunately, it "sunk" the neck pickup, and then I was never ambitious enough to make any adjustments or rather I was afraid to. But it still sounded great though!!
    Ahhh memories.

    be evil uncle ereck

While your neice is away one day, replace the neck with a 50's style neck and restring it with 11 gauge strings!!! Tell her the dark side demands sacrifices!!!

...all I did was paint the pickguard, not the guitar itself.

Painting the pickguard is easy: unscrew it, take it off, lay it on a flat surface, PAINT! I will say, it actually looks better in the photos than in person. You can see some "flaws" in the paint, but it looks fine.

If you go with flat black, it comes out looking like bakelite, looks REALLY good.

    take care, -Eric
