Esquire starvation
I've had a white blonde Esquire ordered since the last half of February.
THE WAIT IS ABOUT TO KILL ME!!! I've ordered it through a local dealer who has been very good to me. I'm certain that he is going to cut me a really good deal. He always takes good care of me. Because of Fender's regular manufacturing rhythm, the latest word is that white blondes will be available again the first week of May. I know... that is just a couple weeks away, but I'm ready to scream!! Don't they understand??!?!?!?? The Parker P-36's have caught my eye as a Tele-like plaything and I saw one for $599. I was tempted to jump, but I regained control (barely). Life is hard waiting for an Esquire. |

It is definitely worth the wait. My white blonde Esquire leaves all the other Teles sitting in the closet.

He has been really good to me and I try to promote his music store at gigs. We even have a banner for his store at one club after he cut us an awesome deal for a house PA system. He probably took a loss for the promotional benefit because he sold it to them for considerably less than half of MSRP. A different area dealer just got in a black Esquire. Black is my least favorite color option, buit it is a waaay good Esquire. I telephoned my dealer with the info so he could tweak his distributor to shoot a good blonde one to him asap. So I wait some more. P.S. I already own a Nocaster Relic and a 1976 Telecaster Custom, so I'm not starving to death here... just to the point of tears. |

Ahhhh, the painful wait is OVER!! It arrived yesterday evening. I checked it out today. It's a knockout! Complete satisfaction!! (for the time being)
It's in white blonde. The body seems like it is a single piece of wood, no seams are detectable after really close inspection. Question for the Classic 50's Esquire owners - how low was the pickup set? Mine is nearly flush with the face of the bridge plate. I don't mind the way it sounds but I haven't gigged with it yet. How far from the strings is a common adjustment? I'm surprised that the guitar came from the factory with the pickup adjusted so far away from the strings. Could there be some reason for this? |

Yep. Poor factory setup. Raise that pickup and your new toy will come alive. It's a common malady these days. Sort of a starting point would be to put a nickel between the strings and the polepieces... then tweak it from there. I usually wind up lowering the bass side a little (no more than 2 nickels' worth. Congratulations, and good luck!

Thanks Rich for the setup rules of thumb. I have two other Teles and their bridge pickups aren't quite as close as the thickness of a nickel, a nickle and 2/3 maybe. I was just very surprised to see the pickup factory set so far away from the strings. I mean it looked like they deliberately set it way low for some reason. I was wondering if I just got an oddball factory adjustment, or if there was some reason they felt that the Esquire pickup should actually be that far from the strings.
I have a 2004 Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker with a single P-90 dogear pickup that is farther from the strings than most guitars and that guitar is a tone machine! That P-90 pickup and mahogany (Santa Maria) body is a chemistry made in Heaven! Some Gibsons can sound good! I'm lickin' my chops for my Tuesday gig! Thanks again! |

It's not a hard and fast rule, but a good starting point. Let your ears be the judge, and you'll have it exactly how you want it with a little experimentation. Best of luck to you!
