Can anyone help me find a True "Pro" Guitar tech. in the Austin Texas area? I have lost faith in a finding a Guitar Maintainance person with High (Consistant) standards. Who can I trust? Thanks

i use Chris Forshage

www.forshage.com

I haven't had a problem with anything he's done, but I may not be REAL picky... Chris is a guy who would be willing to talk and work with you, though. Very friendly, and knows how to listen.

He's on 53rd (North Loop) between Airport and Guadalupe, and can be reached at 791-1166.

I was referred to him years ago by Dale at Workhorse guitars, and haven't ever looked for anyone else.

Down south....

...in San Antone. If you're ever down this way, myself and those in the know, go to Gene Warner. I won't let anyone else touch my guitars but him. Fantastic service - but that's just my two cents!

I've used...

20th Century Guitar (SEE EDIT BELOW!) on South Lamar, next to Austin Vintage and just around the shopping center from Ray Henning's Heart O'Texas Music. That's all they do there is guitar and bass tech work.

And, Tony Nobles in Wimberly, Tx (17 miles south of Dripping Springs). He used to have a shop in Austin, but now just works out a shop over his Garage at home. He builds lots of guitars from scratch, builds the two Kendrick models and now is making D-45-style Acoustic guitars of super high quality.

20th Century did a nice job on two or three of my guitars. But Tony did a fantastic job on my '69 Tele.

Austin is a town with lots of guitar talent of all kinds.

Good Luck
Paul Green

EDIT (OOPS... It the Custom Shop... not 20th Century Guitar. Man, my 53 year old mind is slipping badly.)

Thanks for the Info....... The reason i'm asking

I'll check with some of these guys...... See If I get a good Vibe. I'm only Leary becouse , In the past I gave My "Pride and Joy" to a Well-known Guitar tech/ luthier.....only to find out he doesnt even do the work, he passes stuff off to a guy in "Training".. I received a Half-ass job. Blew my mind.... Oh well. I don't want to seem non-trusting to any guitar tech's. There is alot out there taking Short-cuts on work and giving work to less skilled worker's. The Cool thing about this town is there are alot of great techs. I'm looking for a %100 Bad Ass , Artist that does %100 of the work (No Hand-offs). Thanks for all the info + any more Info/Experience's would be great. Thanks again

I've never seen anyone but customers in the shop w/ Chris, so if he's 'handing-off', his helper's a phantom...

but I'm sure he'd be glad to just talk about what you need and how you need it...

Rob Hacker

Despite his last name, he does great work. I think he's who Paul is referring to (next to Austin Vintage), but his shop is called the Custom Shop.

You can also try to get the 'vibe' from Walter at the Musical Exchange. He does good work, too. Like a good barber, he gives free insults with his work. (Told me I played guitar like a drummer.)

Both of these guys are good to work with. It's a good idea to get the good vibe. Go check them out.

I third Rob @ the Custom Shop. He's done setup work on my strats, but now that I play tele's, I've had no need for his repair work, but I do get parts from him all the time. Wait that's where I got most of my hardware for my tele. Great place. Then you can walk over to the Vintage shop and drool! The go talk to the great Ray Henning, funny guy.

Very cool.............

Chris (Forshage)was the first one I got a hold of ... I brought one guitar into him for a (New nut and Basic set-up.) He said he will have it done Tues. (Less then 24hrs!) I have other guitars that need more serious work, If I'm happy with his work , I'll bring in the next one. I felt he was really into my guitar, So I have high hopes. nice guy as well. I'm also going to check out the other tech's that you guys have had positive experience's with. Gtrjones, Thanks for the link to his web-page(great looking Arctops). I would have never found his page with a "search engine".............

Is that what I think it is?

Did he set up the guitar we were talking about getting set up? Is it done? Are you keeping it a secret? How'd it turn out?

Thumbs up on Chris Forshage

I just had him refret my 1954 Guild archtop, and he did a terrific job. Fast (less than a week), very affordable, and it plays and looks *great*. I'm very impressed!
