See, I'm wired completely different. I saw that pic and thought "Nice costume, I wonder if the guitar actually works."

A guy at my office does freelance photography too, and he thought he'd show off one of his models, scantily clad (or un-clad, i forget), crawling all over some low-end guitar. He asked what I thought and I said "Looks like a cheap guitar. Probably won't help it sell any." Smart marketing people selling guitars to men show girls in the audience going wild, making people dream about how they can use the guitar to get attention.

Heavy-metal hair babes do nothing for me. This picture sure does, though:

henry wells, you made me laugh. and t prior, that's pretty much in line with what i was saying. i think it all has to do with how we are made. sure, influence plays a part but so does our make up. this is going to sound very sexist (and i don't think i am by any accounts) but has anyone else noticed that a lot of girls play guitar like they throw? earlier when i said i wanted to marry natalie merchant's guitarist it was becuase she was the first girl i had ever seen that played the guitar like she owned it. i've seen more since then. and i'm not saying that women can't play or anything like that. but i know of one girl guitar player that is a much better rythme player than me (i was in a band with her for a few years) but she still plays like a girl.
if no one else has noticied it, then i guess it's just me. thought it might have something to do with the topic. and btw, i always thought it was so cool when i found a girl guitar player.

Women Rock!

I LOVE the Donnas. They play full throttle rock and roll.
The guitarist has been schooled in the ways of AC DC and Priest.
Makes me grin.

I agree with Mandy. Both my son and my daughter have had the same opportunities to play guitar and sing. My daughter, who is 6 took up playing guitar at 5yo and has a mild interest - and some talent - but she is desperate to learn the violin because of the influences from school.

Sensing my diappointment about not being totally devoted to the guitar, she gave me a hug and promised to practice guitar occasionally but confessed she was going to put her efforts into learning the violin.

Out of all the children that take guitar lessons at school, less than 1 in 5 have been girls.

Having said that we had a great time last week when she sat with one of my Teles on her knee making an unwholly row, both plugged in and the volume quite loud. I'm not so sure our neighbours enjoyed it as much.

On the flip side of that, she's quite a dancer having achieved honours in her recent ballet exams, but the number of boys learning ballet, modern and Irish dancing is less than 1 in 10.

My summary. Boys will be boys (which includes playing guitar) and girls will be girls (which also includes playing guitar but to a much lesser extent).

No science involved in my theory, just observation.

Peter

Good grief.... am I getting old? The first thing I thought was 'another goofy guitar' probably because Lita never did anything for me. Now Charlotte from Ash does something for me....

There is a friend of mine who plays in the local scene with me, I kid you not she plays better than 95% of the people I know(and I know A LOT of guitar players including pro's)... Totally unschooled musically but she can sit in on anything and just play cool sh*t... it freaks me out... the only thing I got on her is speed(big deal) and aggression. She's who I aspire to be from a "feel" perspective.... the lady just "smokes".

Great thread, in answer to the "challenge" post, here's a list of my favorite female pickers.

Chrissy Hynde
Susan Tedeschi
Emily Saliers
Amy Ray
Jennifer Batton
Leni Stern
Sharon Isbin
Shannon Curfman
Nanci Griffith
Dolly Parton(yeah, she can PLAY)
Meshell N'degeocello(bass player, but she rocks)
Ani DiFranco
Meredith Brooks
Deanna Carter
The list goes on and on.

Jake

P.S.-Maybe the reason more women don't play guitar is because a large percentage of them aren't interested in picking up chicks?

Also...

Gail Ann Dorsey, playing bass with David Bowie. Really tasteful, strong bass lines.

Great post Jakedog... I love Chrissy Hynde and Ani DiFranco especially... we actually do an Ani cover called "Napoleon"... that tune smokes and people totally dig it (even though 90% of them don't know it).
As for picking up chicks... ummm, well believe it or not my singer is is ummm, what's the p.c. term nowadays... ummm Lesbian?

How can we forget these great women of studio and pop

Mary Ford- Played ryth. guitar and sang for the greatest guitar player of our century (He had a guitar named after him, invented multitrack recording, played very fast, still gigs arond today)

Mary Osbourne - Played jazz guitar with everybody from Xavier Cougart to Frank Sinatra

Carol Kaye - chick with the pick..on either guitar or bass she is probably one of the most recorded studio musicians alive...she could bury most players on either instrument...

Lady Bo - Sexy, funky and very cool.....she gave Bo Diddley that drivin thing.

Men are from Mars...Women are from Venus

When I launch my fishing boat at 4:00 in the morning, I am always amazed by the lack of chicks as well...

What !?! Nobody has mentioned ...

... Wendy Melvoin yet?

http://www.geocities.com/tornado_lynn/FruitConcert.jpg

And she played a lot of Telecaster too!

If guitar is a sexy instrument, then Wendy has a lot to do with that (for me, at least!).

Double Take

I believe I mention Wendy Melvoin earlier in this post or at least I did in another 'woman' thread a while back. Wendy Melvoin is probably one of my favorite guitar players, ever. I learned how to play funk from listen to her work with Prince and her own Wendy and Lisa project. She's also played on a bunch of other folks records. She was all over Seal's first two releases and that sweet opening guitar part on Sheryl Crow's My Favorite Mistake is played by Wendy as well.

I am glad ...

... Wendy not only inspired men in a more 'hormonal' way, but also was able to be a role model for ladies like Shnook!
