Again, of Cheap guitars...

I haven't been on/around this forum for quite awhile, and haven't bought a guitar for years, coincidence?

I dropped by a Guitar Center yesterday (first time in over a year in any music store) and there it was: a blackguard Squier 51 in baby poop yellow for $125!

I had to tune it up and plug it in. then I had to buy it. It was ALL GOOD: tone, playability, construction, appearance 8)

$125 out the door! :D

I can't wait to set it up and...I don't foresee changing anything on it, not the pickups, not the tuners, nada.

I won't bother posting a pic, you all know 'em.

125 BUCKS! wow.

Mik

Welcome back! I've missed seeing Jack.

I've given up trying to find a bargain, but the 51 seems like a legitimate inexpensive Tele from all the pumping here. I think I'll give it a look/see.

$125!!!

You gotta love it... LOL. You can't beat that with a stick... especially if it plays well. I am so DONE spending a ton on gear. Congrats, that's awesome. I recorded with a stock Artcore this weekend, it cost me $269. Sounds great, the sound guys couldn't get over it.

Squire 51?

Hi. I'd like to know if you got a Squire Tele for that price... or a Squire 51... of the Strat shaped humbucker bridge pup variety. Thanks.. Al Boggs

Thanks for the "welcome back", Eric and J (Jon, right?), I had to drop by after this score!

Al, it's the Squier 51, with the bridge humbucker pup(coil tap), Strat neck pup, Tele style neck, pbass style blackguard and controls...here's a pic courtesy of Mus Fr:

coil tapped, the bucker gets a little twang-y!

Very bright sound, I am thinking of mods after all, drop in a tone control or install a cap or resistor (I'll look up what to do!) to tame the brightness, just turning down the guitar's volume control seems to reduce the brightness.

But not a Blondie! I shoulda tried harder, maybe a ziplock gig bag thrown in!

At $125 otd, it'd be like haggling over the price of postcards in Tiajuana.

Git 1!

I bought one a few months ago cause I couldn't believe how well it played. I'm almost done modding it which includes repainting it, made my own p/g & control plate to accept a tele p/u switch, a telecaster top loader bridge & Glendale saddles & a Rio Grande humbucker. I've more than doubled the purchase price. Oh well, I can't help myself.

I modded mine beyond all recognition. But when I had the stock humbucker in there I did find that it got a smoother and more open tone with its treble edge dropped down just below the edge of the pickup ring and the bass edge a bit above it. It's worth a few twists of a screwdriver to check out.

They're Great Even at "Full" Price

of $149, but getting a deal always sweetens the whole thing. I had a $75 gift certificate to my local store for Christmas '04. More than half a Squire 51. I brought mine home and kept thinking I was losing my mind, it just seemed wayyy too nice. Figured the pickups would catch fire, or the tuners would fall off. I'll probably keep mine as is, at least for the forseeable future. Seriously.... if you don't own one of these things you probably haven't played one. I loaned mine to fellow TDPRIer Dennis B. and I aint seen it in weeks!

Mine is blonde with a white guard that looks like it was finished with a bolo machete by the dude in Indonesia. Who cares? Adds to the charm.

Hey Eric, you ain't that far a drive from TO to VT. Cmon down and pick one up. My local place is GuitarSam in Montpelier, although you can find 'em anywhere. I too have seen these on roadtrips where I went to a GC for $119, and heard of 'em for $99 also.

It's the guitar that got me back into electrics. Saw all the good reviews and purchased one. Did a few changes to mine (new jack, bridge, nut, pickups and wiring). And a setup. Plays nice with 11 flatwounds on it. Gets a totally different twang than the Tele.

I'm even more amazed at how well it stays in tune and plays.

Only downside . . . both my '51 and Squier Tele are black with white guards. And 1 piece maple necks. My wife thinks she's seeing double.

I put a .022 cap across the volume pot on my '51 and it took the ice pickiness right out.

That's not a downside - it's a good strategy. Wives are less likely to notice a new a guitar if it looks like the others.

No loss in volume. It just sounds like it has a tone control rolled back about half way.
