Bridge Cover
I recently recieved a 75 tele from my uncle and it has the original Bridge Cover on it. I know that these were discontinued ( I'm not sure when) but I only half undersrand why. I'm geussing that picking down at the bridge gives the guitar a more twangy sound that is sought after for teles, but is there anything else players have against them? (I think they make the teles look awesome.

They're not discontinued. You can still buy em. But most people don't use them. Occasionally you see someone on TV or in a magazin playing with one on. Lots of times you see them in tele beauty shots for books, magazines and stuff.

ashtray
I recently finished my first Tele and have always loved the look of the ashtray bridge cover. I found one on ebay and when I put it on I realized the shortcomings as far as the basic elimination of palm muting. BUT I love the feel as opposed to dragging your palm accross relatively sharp set screws. The worst thing I found was with my wee mits I wasn't able to do any volume control effects, 'cause I couldn't reach the strings and the volume control together. My fix was to re-wire the control plate and mount it in reverse. It moves the vol. knob much closer to the pick guard thus eliminating one problem. Next was the 3-way switch (in my case 4-way) that now is "way low" on the body. I looked through a bunch of old parts and found an old TV knob that was about 1 1/2" tall and replaced the tophat with it. Now I can have my ashtray and enjoy it too...
