Having a problem with new 72 telecaster deluxe-rattle

Hi everyone, I went today to switch guitars, from the hwy1 to the humbucker Deluxe. The only one they had was in black..:(. So I took it. The store was so loud, that I missed a problem went I opened the case, I hear this rattle. Not the tuners, string trees, but coming from inside the neck--the truss rod. even at the 12th fret to the nut, I can hear soemthing is loose. I attempted to tighten the exposed nut for the truss rod, 1&1/2 turns with no change. Any other ideas what to do? It will take GC 2 to 3 weeks to get another one, I was told today.....:((((

I've got the same problem with my '72 Custom. It's only the g-string. I've tried everything to get rid of it. I've put a new bridge and saddles, which I would have upgraded anyway, and it's had a pro set up. It might be the nut slot is cut wrong. Basically, I just live with it.

dont worry

It goes away eventually as the wood settles.
It does help to tweak the rod a bit but a seasonal change will get rid of it, and you wont hear it through an amp so if you dig the guitar then keep it.

I found on my Squier Custom II that the pickup selector switch was ever so slightly loose, this caused a rattle that at first sounded like something in the neck pickup area was vibrating. Just an idea anyway

Try adjusting the truss rod and make sure it works properly. My MIM Tele Custom had a completely frozen truss rod when I purchased it. I purhcased the guitar while on vacation, so I had to wait just over a year for Fender to send the replacement neck to my local authorized repair shop for warranty replacment.

As others have said, it may be no problem; but definetly give it a decent workout & checkup before your return period expires.

I'd be inclined to think it may be the nut. If raising the height of the saddles helps that would also suggest that it's the nut.

:) I have good news!, No, not that insurance Co, but I found what was the rattle in the neck. It was the high E string>tuner head, where the tuner slips thru the headstock, where a washer and nut are then set, well the nut was missing and the washer was claning against the string. Fortunately, I did't damage the truss rod by my attempt to tighten what sounded like a loose rod. So after coming home from GC in Austin and the manager who has been there, for me, fixed the problem-with new strings installed-free, the deluxe came home with me. I rechecked the truss rod, still a little bow, due to my lossening the bullet nut, the night before(I wasn't about to leave it over tighten) It took 1/2 a turn to bring the neck to that low action sweet spot. Plays like a champ, still not completely hum free, like my other electrics, but I knew that going in. The deluxe sounds sweet in all postions-clean and no hum. Its only when I am using alot of gain/distortion that the slight hum comes in, and its only slight. I can get alot of tones, from the stones to Led Zeppelin to overdriven blues. I can hear the twang of the single coil tele here at the bridge pick up. This is a guitar I will grow into, enjoying the diverse tones it can produce. This Telecaster isn't a Les Paul nor is it a Strat, and this is why I like it, kind of the best of both worlds
