I thought this should be separate. Here is a list of recordings employing some kind of conscious distortion through a variety of methods, including slashed speakers, semi-removed tubes, pedals and other pirmitive outboard devices. It starts in 1949 and ends with Satisfaction, by which time the true pioneering was over and the tone was well-established and recognized.
From there on in it was just a question of quantity.
The legend regarding dates
rec - rec date
rel - release date
pc - date it hit the pop charts
rbc - day it hit the r&b charts
THE ALLIGNMENT OF ITEMS WILL BE A LITTLE OFF BECAUSE THEY'RE COPIED FROM A WORD DOC. SHOULD BE EASY TO SET STRAIGHT AGAIN.

Marty & Fuzz

Marty Robbins "Don't Worry Bout me" had a fuzz on it too. What year was that? I believe mid-50's.
The Temptations had one on their recording of "AINT TO PROUD TO BEG"

don't know about the first...

recorded esquire/broadcaster/nocaster/telecaster but don randall and george fullerton werre shopping it around the studios very early on...

the vivi-tone company owned by famous instrument innovator lloyd loar already made an electric solid body guitar in the early-mid 30s... an often overlooked detail...

carol kaye and les paul are both about as renowned as fibbers as roy buchanan... although their resume is masterful and holds it's own just on what we known they often embellish stories and credit themselves with things not 100% or less then true...

Still hoping someone out there can put ears to the recording of Kitty Wells\Ernie Ford "I'll Never Be Free" and tell me whether they think it's a Tele at play. I simply can't make any definitive call on this one.

Thanks for warning on Carol. Les's fables are well known.

I knew about Lloyd Loar (bit of a mad visionary, I think) If I'm not mistaken, he designed the Gibson A-mandolin, one of the most beautiful to look at instruments I've ever seen.

Now, I would buy a plane ticket and personally fly out to shake the hand of, and buy at least six beers for, the person who could find a recording using Loar's solid-body guitar.

The A's were already a stock item for Gibson.
Loar came to Gibson in 1922 and left in 1925. He was known for taking the top of the line F4 mandolin and improving it to the F5. They look very similar but some main differences are removing the oval sound hole and using a pair of f-holes, specifying West Virginia Red Cedar for the top and a better quality control program for the top of the line instruments. A signed Loar F5 in mint condition is worth near $100K now. Here's a link below to my F4 from 5yrs prior to Loar arriving.

64 Strat - I had the right picture in my head of Loar's beautiful mandolin (F-holes, curly scroll) but of course it's the F series, not the A - for some reason I had it in my head that the oval-hole mandolins started with O and what is actually the F series started with A. See an O, call it an O I guess. Thanks.
