My current FAVE Tele player is...
James Burton!!!
He plays all those tasteful, melodic solos on the Rick Nelson records. There's one on the DVD that I need to hear on CD- it's the one on the song "You Tear Me Up". He nearly always plays a Tele and you can recognise the tone every time. |

Fave Rave Tele Player
For me it's gotta be Jim Campilongo.
Can't wait for next week's release of the Little Willies. But wait... Jim Weider - Phenomenal chops!

I go back & forth between Brent & Redd... Each ones' playing is totally different, but they are both great Chicken Pickers, and both can pop those strings... Another thing I like about these two guys is that they have a broad-based knowledge of different styles, and can pull some blues, or jazz, or soulful licks out of their bag of tricks at will... And they can play real fast...

I have a sunburst one and a cream one... I love both. Weird thing is, the necks are similar, but the one on the cream one is clearly beefier... different year I suppose...
You can see both in this thread

lots of faves, but...
vince gill is up near the top.
imo, hes the REAL DEAL. meaning that he can do it all. sing like a bird, play his fanny off and writes great songs! its too bad that hes been slickly packaged and generally overproduced. i wish he would get off the golf course and focus on playing and putting something together that would really smoke! he could do it!!! and his tele playing..? well, its kinda bluesy, but also melodic, very precise but soulful,, too. hey, hes from oklahoma and there are lots of great guitarists (jj cale, charlie christian, barney kessel) are from there!! must be the water... imho rand z (tropicalsoul.net) |

A current favorite here is Steve Ferguson (& The Midwest
Creole Ensemble). I got their Jack Salmon & Derby Sauce CD ('93) a few weeks ago and really liking it. Not only is there good Tele playing (kinda earlier on James Burton & Roy Buchanan styled) but their songs, vocals and ensemble playing are as well on the 11 cuts. The CD has different music styles here but with a New Orleans type flavor. Steve was the co-founder of NRBQ in the late '60s. I ordered their '95 CD recently. Thanks to the TDPRI member that posted a thread in the "Bad Dog" on him! :D

Burton Necks

However, there is an obvious difference in tint with the partscaster neck having an amber hue similiar to new '52 reissues while the Red Sparkle's neck is significantly lighter, bordering on no tint whatsoever. Getting back to the thread topic, lately I've been digging John 5's two albums. Say what you will about appearances but that boy can flat out play. |

mmm....
i go from obsession to obsession. last year it was Redd, then Roy Nichols, then Roy Buchanan. Now is Redd again, but I just put on Toni Price's 'Born to be Blue' and James Burton is great on that. Same old names Im afraid.
Hang on, What about Casper Rawls? (Leroi Bros etc) I dont hear enough about that guy. Any fans out there? |
