52 On Ebay .......... Price Is Really Getting Up There......

It's almost twice what the price guides show for a '52. The seller has added this note on the last day of the auction:

"A 2.5% closing and handling fee will be added to the final closing price of this auction"

At the current price ...... that's over $1100. I doubt that that's allowed by Ebay. If in fact he actually gets over $44K for the guitar, you'd think he could take care of the closing and handling.

Nacho ............ since you're the expert, shouldn't the bridge mounting screws be slot head screws?

At those late dates of Nov/Dec a '52 could very well have recieved phillips head screws.

That is funny that he won't take pay-pal because "they are just way too greedy." Then on the last day of the auction he adds a 2.5% closing fee.
Is that ever a case of the kettle calling the pot black!

The pictures show that the neck build date was December '52, so the guitar more than likely wasn't finished and sold untill early '53.
They started changing from some of the slot head screws sometime in '52, and by the end of '53 was when they changed over to philips head on everything.
So I could see a guitar built at the end of '52 or early '53 having both slot and x head screws.

I'm not going to bid on it because I think "tuttrup" is "just way too greedy"!

I'm with you cowboy ............ he's too greedy ......... I'm not going to bid.

I asked the seller about the screws.......... he answered by saying he had more pictures if I wanted to see them.

His adding a "2.5% closing and handling fee" on the last day of the listing, besides showing very poor form, would appear to be a violation of eBay policy. It may also be illegal. Without question all bidders to that point could justifiably retract their bids, if so inclined.

I found this on eBay's rules.

While sellers can charge a reasonable shipping and handling fee, they can not charge eBay buyers a surcharge (additional fee) for their use of ordinary forms of payment. This includes acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Users may not use systems or techniques to circumvent, or avoid, eBay fees.Furthermore, some forms of payment surcharges, such as credit card surcharges, are forbidden under the laws of many states, including California.

So not only is he breaking the rules on eBay, he may also be breaking state laws.

Just found this one also;

handling fees can not be excessive or listed as a percentage of the final sale price.

He's just an outlaw breaking all the rules on eBay!

Wowie Zowie!

Is that not the cleanest '52 I've ever seen! And look at that original plastileather gig bag; There was a not-very-responded-to thread about them here not long back.

I'm grateful to the seller just for the eye candy!

Well, he just really dropped the ball. Not a smart seller.

His listing is now blatently in violation of eBay guidelines. His response to a question, posted at the bottom of the listing:

Q: Why the 2.5 percent?
A: Sorry the 2.5 covers shipping, insuring this item, and ebay fees. sorry but I am selling this item for someone else and have to make sure all the bases are covered so I do not get screwed.

It is his responsibility to pay the eBay fees, not the winning bidder. You may report this violation starting here:

OK now there is no 2.5%
Someone must have let him know that he was about to lose his auction. Maybe he got my "Ask seller a ?".

He just posted this:

Q: You already stated that the seller pays shipping and insurance. Why the 2.5
Feb-05-06
A: THERE IS NO 2.5 PERCENT ADD ON. WINNER WILL PAY ONLY SHIPPING AND INSURANCE. THAT IS IT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGES!!!!!

Hmmm. I LOVE this Tele. Would almost sell my soul for it but am aprehensive because:

1) The pictures are not as deailed as I'd like to see for a guitar in this price range;

2) No assurance that it is playable (straight neck, etc); and

3) The seller has a long and good history, but mainly with one dollar and ten dollar Star Wars toys. No pricey items and no instruments.

If a reputable instrument dealer was selling it, I might need to have a serious (i.e. hours of pleading) discussion with the wife. I'm just too conservative to bite on what is probably a SUPER guitar in the case of this auction.

It will be fun to see the final figures in a few hours...

I just received a message through eBay from the seller.
It was a nice note full of expletives and something about me reproducing with myself.

I'm really starting to like this seller!!

If I have offended anyone on this thread then I'm sorry.
If I have offended the seller that just sent me the message, then please take your own advice!!!

You got that just for helping him out basically?!? Whoa, you were the one doing him a favor, it could've just been forwarded to the ebay contact info, instead you gave him a head's up and that's the gratitude you get!

BTW I remember seeing your butterscotch blackguard sometime ago and thought it looked quite nice. 8)
