Gatton Jazz gig
Saw a video of a Gatton jazz gig on another page, takes a bit before his solo, but sounds cool on his old '53

I love Danny's playing, and actually seeing him play is just that much more exhilarating. I mean, how effortless does he make it look?? I was lucky enough to work at Elektra when 88 Elmira St. and Cruisin' Deuces came out, so I got to see him several times.
One show was in an NYC club that usually hosted heavy rock acts (Anthrax, another of our artists at the time, also played there), and the usual crowd of metalheads was hanging around in the back with their "yeah, show me something" 'tudes. By the end of the concert, they were pressed against the stage, positively aglow with hero worship. Danny's live playing was just that irresistible. Still miss him. |

I was at that show!!!!
That was filmed at the Roxy in DC (dumb country). I went with a bunch of my Danny friends. Awesome show!! I can still remember it, because it was the first time I heard him do "harlem nocturne." That band - "Funhouse" (without a singer) - played a weekly gig at Gallagher's (sp?) on Capitol Hill every Thursday night. To me, that's my favorite Danny era. His solos were relaxed, inspiring, incendiary, and loooooong. But his comping was just as cool - really swinging and every chorus was different.
Thanks for the link!! Brings back a lot of good memories. Edit: Sorry - it wasn't "harlem nocturne" but "meloncholy seranade" |

If you like Danny Gatton playing jazz, check out his cd with B-3 player Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless."

His moaning wails on "Melancholy Serenade" left me sitting in tears remembering how much we loved to see him and talk w/ him, and how much joy he brought to his playing. Sure do miss him. cheers, Jon |
