Too minimal?

I was thinking of a no-guard esquire for my next project. It seemed like a good idea until i mocked one up in PSP
Maybe a solid color would work better?

Looks pretty barren. I reccommend to go ahead with it .......... string it up and see how you like it. You can always add a pickguard later but once you drill the pickgauard holes you can't go back .............. of course you can always use a clear pickguard.

I'm thinking it might be a better idea with binding or sunburst or both. Maybe a nice flame maple cap? It is pretty austere like this.

Yep - that's the way to go.
I think this Tele would look killer in black with cream binding.

Inlay maybe?

...some kind of marquetry(sp?) design in the area under the strings between the bridge plate & the neck? I kind of like it as it is.....it could grow on me. Best, Hank

Yes, that's sounding pretty good. Gibbons has a bunch of custom Esquires with all kinds of abalone inlay and such. Way over the top in a minimalist kinda way, but the surf green with cream binding might be just the understated audacity that might work.

Or forget binding and go for a pure racecar look, like:

1.Yellow with black stripes

2. White with blue stripes

3. Red with white stripes

Bones, the only thing I don't like is that the neck and body are the same exact color. Maybe if the body were more of a butterscotch color, for some contrast? ;)

I would take it even further and leave of the fretboad markers and peghead decal.

Show the world how simple and beautiful an Exquire is.
All the other stuff is just ornamentation.

just to throw stuff out there....

i've liked this pickguard(with the pin-up)
for a while now...

Pickguard from "Joe's Cool Shop"

maybe a black guard with a similar pin-up in B&W.

still leaves a lot of the body exposed,
and no neck pup,of course.

I like the minimalist approach,

but with a pretty top, and some binding...

You need to ditch the hotdog plate and go with a rear routed body. It's the hotdog plate that's throwing off the look. The coolest thing about humble guitars is that, when you gig with them the audience seems to have lower expectations because after all, "the poor guy can barely afford a guitar." LOL, it sort of sets a baseline in the room that you can really take advantage of!

Yowsa !!!! With a highly figured Ash Body that would be
one super sick Esquire. And...if You could get a highly figured Neck to match it.... :D
Thanks btw for a tremendous idea - I know now exactly
what My Esquire (when I can afford one) is gonna look
like

That's what I did. Binding and maple. The rear-route helps the look. I used Tiger-wood knobs, this pic was taken before the knobs/pots arrived.

Looks exactly like what a guitar is - a tool. Like a hammer or screwdriver. I like it.

I like it, too. Or -- what the hell -- do you know of a local artist whose work you like? Let them go nuts on it and have something unique in a different way. (Might I suggest something that looks nothing like Clapton's abominations.) 8)

Minimal To The Max ..................

As cowboytwang suggested above......... no fretboard markers and a plain headstock. Rear rout the control cavity so you have no control plate. Use a hardtail Strat bridge and mount the pickup to the body.
