Beefheart Telecaster

Check out this site, great videos of the Captain, full of great telecaster work. Especially the SNL performance from the 80’s.

Nice.

I'm totally into that. I didn't watch any of it, but now I know how I'm going to spend my Friday night! :D

that is really way out there... so to say. i wonder what is going on with beefhearts magicband, that turned out to be mallard in the seventies. i really liked mallard a lot, specially after i saw them on german tv (rockpalast) some 30 or so years ago. great telepicking and slideplaying those mallards did.

no quack on that mallard records. just pure cosmic-crysal slideguitar frozen like a glacier. wish those lps would have a reissue in digital remastered quality.

Mallard/In a Different Climate

There is a double CD (released in 1994) that has the first (and only?) two albums. The CD says digitally remastered. I picked it up on Amazon.

If you're interested, you should also check out www.zoothornrollo.com. He put out a very nice CD a few years back. Great player (still).

I remember the Beefheart performance on SNL, I saw it live. "Ashtray Heart" and "Hothead" if I remember correctly. I was with a group of people who were all shouting at the TV "YOU SUCK" "THIS SUCKS" and suchlike, I was the lone voice saying "Shut up you philistines, this is great."

They are still around, touring with the Beefheart stuff with John "Drumbo" French doing the vocals.

I remember it too, only I was saying "pinch me, I'm dreaming!". I saw Beefheart in the late 70's at Paul's Mall in Boston and it warped my impressionable young mind permanently Reading a recent thread about tele tone, I was thinking how The Magic Band shaped my idea of what a tele should sound like.

How can you not like "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby"?

Most folks give the Cap'n the razz because his music is mostly discordant. From what I've always heard and read, he rehearsed his band(s) mercilessly; consequently, The Magic Band (and subsequent "Tragic" band) could repeat those "noises" note-for-note. To me, it takes as much talent to do that as it does to play a Bach fugue.

It kinda cleanses the palate, doesn't it?
