There is a thread going on in Bad Dog Cafe that Heather Anne Peel started about Teles In Open G Tuning.

The best way to tune to open G is to turn those little shiny things on the end of the guitar neck.
Once you start turning those tuners you want them to go from low string to high string- D G D G B D. Another open G tuning (that used on Dobro's) is - G B D G B D.

I also like open "D"- D A D F# A D, or go up a hole step to "E"- E B E G# B E.
Sometimes I also use a "Dm" tuning- D A D A D F or D A D F A D.
Some folks like using D A D G A D, it's just standard tuning with the top and low E's droped to D's. You can do quite a bit with that tuning.

I have guitars laying around the house in all sort of open tunings.

I spent my first 20 years as a banjo picker and also non-pedal steel and Dobro, so I love using open chord tunings.
Open tunings not just for Slide and Dobro's anymore.

I have seven guitars now, all are in open 'A' tunings (same as G, just a tad 'higher'....I think). I'm exclusively a 'picker', not slider (yet).
