Black Pickguard It Or Not?
I went with a cream/black/cream p/gd that matches the "aged" binding very closely.
However, I am one of those who love blackguards, but . . . . . . ????? Should I swap it out with a 5-hole black, or a black/cream/black, or leave it alone??? ![]() Disregard the compensated saddles . . . they were not adjusted in this photo |

I think black is a good choice but here's what it could look like with a pearl guard.

Imho black Pickguards look best on light colored guitars or on black guitars.
But I have to attest jwells some style and good taste here...I, too, put a tortoise guard on one of my sunbursts and it really came to life...what used to be a generic looking axe (everyone has a sunburst!) it looked totally classy with the new guard...a bit like Marty Stewart's famous Tele...

WOW . . . lot of help here . . .
Thanks Brian for putting the p/gds on "my guitar." Nice work! OK, I have a cream/black/cream one on it now, and it matches the aged body-binding perfectly, so I am going to order three of them - a black/cream/black, a mint one, and a tortise one - as I like all three. Let's see . . . three special orders from WD @ $68 each (that's what the cream/black/cream one cost) = $204. This way . . . I can change anytime . . . WRONG!!! I'll decide which one soon enough . . . I'm not usually this picky, but I built this "Partscaster" with the "best of parts" as if I were building a Tele from the start, so I want it right. And if I ever decide to sell it, I won't say it's anything other than what it is - an exceptional Partscaster!!! Not perfect, somewhat dinged in a few areas, but sounds and plays well! |

A standard p/gd won't work on it, as I have quite a few standard ones at home that all work on my MIA Tele. The one for this sunburst Tele needed to be "tilted" (for lack of a better word) somewhat in order to fit . . . holes didn't line up, nor did it go up flush against the neck area, and the space around the bridge plate was uneven . . . I had to trace out what I wanted for WD, and they cut one according to the tracing . . . $68 is what they charged me! I even had to Dremel the one I got to make it fit better. For all I know, this may not even be a true Fender body, but since it had old pots with some codes indicating it was a 1976 . . . I assumed it was. I'm not sure who even makes double-bound bodies??? |
