MAybe Someone can tell me something about this MIJ tele?

Hi,

I was hoping to get any and all information I can on this Tele. I "won" it on E-Bay Christmas night from a seller in Japan. Not too much info in the auction just that it is a '93 or '94 "Shop Order" '67 re-issue.

It also happens to be my dream tele and in a mere couple days, has become my favorite ever guitar and i have gone through many. I can't put the sucker down.

Just curious if anyone has seen one before or knows anything about how many there may be out there, or how I can find out.

Thanks.

Someone can correct me if I have this bass-ackwards, but I think that is Fender Japan's take on the Albert Collins Tele. The Iceman used a '66 Custom which was unusually an ash body (must have been ordered finished Natural) and fitted with a PAF-type hummer in the neck slot and six-saddle bridge. He was known as the 'Master of the Telecaster'.

As a signature Custom Shop model it is worth a packet.

Looks like a great guitar - you did good. The -85 means 85,000 yen, so that was an expensive one new.

I'm a huge Albert Collins fan which is why I was looking for such a guitar. According to interviews I have read Albert says it was a 61 that he had re-finished in the 70's and had the binding added. Various magazines and website refer to it as alternately a 67-66 custom. He had a back-up as well that ended up in the Hard Rock in Chicago. He claims that one he had the binding added as well. When Dan Erlwine did a story about it for GP he mentioned everything but the year.

Anyway thanks for the answer, i didn't know what that 85 meant so that's another part of the puzzle.

I saw Albert live just one time shortly before his death, he gave everything he had and put on an awesome show.

GP [July '93]: Was your Tele originally routed for a stock pickup and then redone for the humbucker?

AC: Yeah, that's right. When I got that guitar in 1969, that was already in it. I think it's a Gibson humbucking, like a Les Paul or something on that order. I have a regular switch on the Tele, but I can use both pickups though. I had a 1959 Telecaster--got it stole from me while we were playing. I got this one I have now from Ace Music Company in Santa Monica, California. I got a fret job on it a few weeks ago, and it's alright. The edge of it got a little sharp, but it's working out alright. We used big frets.

GP: How did you get binding on a '61 Tele?

AC: That's not stock. I had that put there in 1982 in L.A. I had two guitars, and they did both. One of them is at the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago. I'm gonna get that binding redone again--hopefully real soon.
