Jerry Reed help

Hey folks.

I'm trying to broaden my guitar horizons and use different playing techniques such as fingerpicking like Jerry Reed.

Can anyone recommend the essential Jerry Reed guitar tracks (electric and acoustic)? I know the big hits like Guitar Man, Amos Moses, and Lord Mr. Ford. I'm looking for others that maybe aren't on all the best ofs. Specifically, I'd like to find some with the contrary motion licks that Brent Mason points out in his video.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Bill

I think brent mentions "tubelo mississipi flash" in one interview i've read. It might've been "wabash cannonball", actually. I like his instrumentals "Struttin" and "Honkin". "The claw" would be great too i think for your purposes.
Hope this helps

My favorite Reed instrumentals are Jiffy Jam, Reedology, The Claw, Blue Finger, Struttin, Two Timin' etc. I guess pretty much all of them. The guy is awesome. He was my biggest influence from my younger days.

As for Brent Mason's video, I will check on those tunes. I have them but can't think of the titles at the moment.

Songs

Another good one is "She Got the Goldmine (I Got The Shaft)." Lord Mr. Ford has to be my favorite.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Sidneystreet, do you happen to know of a compilation of his instrumentals I could get? I've tried weeding through the titles on amazon to find the ones you mentioned, but I'm not finding all of them. Are they spread out all over, or not available?

Thanks again.

They are indeed spread out all over the place. I have most of them on vinyl, out of print.

Here are a couple of great sources for transcriptions and performances of Jerry's instrumentals.

Jerry Reed Heavy Neckin' is by John Knowles and has the tunes transcribed in notation and tablature. Plus, he plays all the tunes on cassette. The tunes are The Claw, Struttin', Mr. Lucky, Jiffy Jam, Reedology, Blue Finger, and The Early Dawn. The book appears to be out of print, but you could get it through interlibrary loan at your public library. Knowles' great solo performances of the tunes are on his CD Sittin Back Pickin. Here's the link to John Knowles' CD. http://www.funkyjunk.com/knowles-pickin.htm

Another cool resource on Reed's playing is Buster B. Jones' Guitar Styles and Techniques of Jerry Reed DVD. Includes Reedology; The Claw; Jiffy Jam; Jerry's Breakdown; Down Home; Papa's Knee; and Lord Mr. Ford

Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Great post Sydneystreet! Thanks for that. I'm really getting into Jerry Reed lately, spent a lot of time learning "The Claw", and now have a bunch of other songs I want to learn.

Those DVD's and Cd's look great.

Pretty Mary Sunlite... A Scooby Classic !

For those of you with kids, like me, who watch Scooby-Doo (or who actually remember from watching yourselves), Jerry Reed even did some original music as guest on the cartoon in the 70's...
:)

Check out . . .

Jerry Reed Video by Buster B Jones

Nashville Picking Vol 1 by Marcel Dadi

Nashville Picking Vol 2 by Marcel Dadi

for some good Jerry Reed pickin instruction. I think the first one was already listed.

Also, on Audio Instruction is The Guitar of Jerry Reed by Michel Lelong if you can find one in print - possibly on Amazon, Ebay or other.

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year!

Thanks so much for all the recommendations. I'm going to try to get my hands on the instructional materials asap so I can save some time on the Amazing Slow Downer. Looks like I'll have to pick and choose from the CD catalog. Probably start with The Essential cd......

I love this place!
