Protecting A New Barewood Tele Body?

I have an unfinished WD bender Tele body that has been sealed in its packaging for a couple of years, i was after some form of wood sealer to apply before i handle it. Is it best to give it a very light sand just in case there's any fingerprint marks on the wood and then clean it down with white spirit? Any help appreciated

Vikki-

If you keep your hands clean there is no problem handling it while you are sanding, etc.

How are you planning to finish it for the long term (or is that what you are asking about)?

Guess you could wear some of those surgical
type latex gloves. Most likely you will use a sealer
anyway though prior to the body top finish.

I guess i was looking at a product i could rub or spray on the body just to seal the wood for a while giving chance to have some routing for a neck humbucker done (or perhaps a swimming pool rout) and to assemble the guitar and do some experiments with the wiring. Finnish could come later but its a decent sound i'm after. The last one i put together lasted about 3 years before it was getting a bit worn to say the least.

Vikki, maybe try DM Guitars in Rayleigh in Essex. I've no experience of them myself but they were featured in this month's Guitar Buyer magazine as selling finishing supplies, incluing nitro-cellulose in a can.

I'm sure a quick call to them will provide you with the advice and help that you're looking for.

There's no need to seal it before you're ready to finish it ............ it's a piece of wood. Just don't leave it outside in the weather. When you're ready to paint it, just wipe it down with naptha to clean it good.

I always wanted to get a tele body stain it sunburst and only put nitro in spots then drop kickit and make real (coyote ugly) kind of Bonnie Raite meets Rory Galligger but for a tele. Dale Hamon

I agree. Here's my HighTech "Broadcaster" body. Since the picture was taken, the guitar has been finished apart from the body being painted and I play this almost every day.

It is scheduled for a relic finish job in 2006 so I don't mind the odd knock, but so far it still looks like new.
