Merry Xmas, and who got a new DIGITAL CAMERA?

First off, Happy Holly Daze and Telecaster Wishes to everyone! :-)

Second, if you got one of those cool new 5- or 6-megapixel digital cameras as a gift, congrats! They really do take beautiful pictures. :-) And we'd all love to see your Teles and other guits and amps and family and pets and/or anything else you "care to share." :-)

However – you could do your Kindly Webmaster (and Lowly Moderator) a big favor if you're careful when posting photos to try to stick somewhere in the neighborhood of the 500-pixel width limit.

Some of the new cams can deliver <u>uncompressed</u> images that are upwards of 1,800 pixels or more (!) in width and height. And what happens is that if you post HUGE photos without shrinking them, anyone with a slow modem is going to be sitting there for a looonnnngggg time waiting for the image(s) to load. :-(

Anyway, Paul's probably too polite to ask, but I've noticed he's had to edit a couple of posts recently, so I thought I'd ask for him. (And me...) So thanks in advance. ;-)

And NOW let's see those pics! :-) CS

With the money I got for Christmas, I will be buying a digital camera. 5 megapixels!
No worries though, I always edit my images before posting them here!

Use Photo Gadget, it's easy!

Photo Gadget is a free program that I found off of download.com. Basically it integrates into your Windows shell and all you have to do is right-click on the .jpg or picture file and choose resize. You have a bunch of options and one of them is in the 320 pix range which is great for forums. 640x480 probably isn't bad either, depends on your moderator ;) but you have to rotate it to do 480 wide and 640 long.

Linky Linky, it takes like 20 seconds to install:

I got one! 5 mega.....whatever. When I figure out how to use it, I'll try to figure out how to post guitar photos.

Don't hold your breath though, I can barely work my cell phone, and I often need help with email attachments.

Dude- you are way too organized. Don't you know about the whole creativity/chaos thing? I only work on guitars on a kitchen counters covered with food with a 2 year old climbing up my leg.

It's a wonder that you get anything done in there.

If anyone is using Photoshop, use it's save for web feature. It will resize your image for web use very easily. Any other questions re: Photoshop, PM me. I'll be glad to help.

mellecaster,
Man I wish my workshop was that organized but after living many decades in chaos it's probably never going to happen ........ although I am trying to get a little better.

Resizing pictures:
IrfanView ........ available from www.irfanview.com is a great little free program. Open a picture in IrfanView ......Click the Image menu ....... select .. Resize/Resample. This window will open.

Type ...... 500 ...... Click OK ..... Picture is resized. Under File menu click Save As and save it to your computer. You original picture will not be changed.

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera. From my research, I've narrowed down to the Canon Powershot range - probably an A520.

Does anyone have any experience of these?

All info appreciated.

I am a big fan of the Canon digital line, particularly the A and G series. I was a big Nikon guy when I did film, but I've been underwhelmed with their consumer-level digital cameras.

We just bought my sister-in-law the A520. It's basically a smaller version of the previous A85, which was a wonderful camera.

If you can save a little more, check out the A610. The swivel-screen is a really nice feature that I'd hate to ever give up (I have a Canon G3).

I wouldn't worry too much....you turn out some nice stuff, from what I've seen....and being real organized, is just a mild form of Mental Illness (hehe)

My wife uses an A520 that she received as a birthday gift earlier this year from her brother. It takes nice photos and she seems to like it. I've alwyas been a Nikon fan having onwed many film SLR Nikon cameras over the years. I still haven't stepped up to a DSLR, but I am most impressed with my Nikon Coolpix 4600 which I really like because it's smal enough for me to carry just about anywhere (especially guitar shows ) and the pics it takes are excellent.

Chris, howcome pictures need to be resized manually? There's that neato script that Paul installed that's supposed to shrink the max width to 500 pixels. In fact, a few of the examples in this thread are a little over 500 pixels and they shrunk fine. Is it a bandwidth thing, or does the script not always work?

JW,

Thanks for that. I ahd been using the software that came with my camera as well as googles picasa2 none of which handled resizing easily...

Now I have irfanview installed and running on my machine thanks to your post! :)
