My Rant Against That Big Fat Goofy Headstock........Picture

Anyone who has read some of my earlier posts regarding the headstock on the Telecaster Deluxe know my feelings on the matter. The recent post entitled "Telecaster with Jazzmaster Neck" got me to thinking "A Jazzmaster neck doesn't look that goofy". I decided to do a comparison of various Fender headstocks. Even the Jaguar headstock isn't as big as the Telecaster Deluxe. The Telecaster Deluxe has a Squire Strat headstock. I realize that headstock was used on Fender Strats under CBS ownership of the company. It was a bad idea then and thank goodness it was later corrected.

  • Although I hadda cell it lass year I found it very charming and it sounded great.
  • There seemed to be an overall magic look to it. Erry thang matched.
  • Not my favorite but a long way from bean the worst Fenner ever did or the worst TELECASTER I ever owned.

I'm undecided on those headstocks, on Strats I much prefer the smaller headstock (my first Squier had a big headstock, but my current has the smaller style), but on the Tele Deluxes, I've gotta agree with Fuzzy, they have a certain charm to them.

Awww, the fatty headstocks are my favorite... I almost just bought a Squier neck for my tele body but instead I bought a CBS at Warmoth. I love the way it looks and personally don't really think the small tele headstocks are that great looking (though it is very classic).

I like 'em. I want an enormous 70s headstock on my baritone, and tele headstock on my jazzmaster.

Caesar Diaz alleges in a tonequest interview about SRVs equipment, that the big heads were tonally superior due to their mass. They look effin' goofy to me, but maybe it would be cool to have an entirely *Disco-thentic* tele (Afro wig not included).

Having grown up in the late 70's-80's I remember thinking that the small headstocks were goofy since nearly all the players I admired (Hendrix, Trower, Roth, Blackmore, Bolin) were using bell-bottom headstocked Strats!

It's weird but I find the darker the stain on the larger headstocks, the better they look for some reason. Just shows how different everyones perceptions are.

    Gotta love the large headstock!

That's one of the reasons I'm jonesing for a Telecaster Deluxe. In the meantime, I'll just have to make do with this:

Hey, I just noticed that it looks like the guitar in my avatar.

    Enough dissing big headstocks!

I am really tired of people putting down the big headstocks, like the one on the Tele Deluxe! My main guitar is a Tele Deluxe and I think it's perfect, headstock and all. For the record, Leo Fender stated in a '78 Guitar Player interview that he was unhappy with the original Telecaster headstock design, and favored the larger Strat headstock. Big headstocks rule!!!

I was there. In my teens, worked at a music store selling large peghead Fenders in the early-mid 70's. The general opinion of my elders at that time was that these were inferior instruments, so that's kind of stuck with me in a way. Guess I need to get a Deluxe to *cure* me of that delusion! :D

I love the Tele headstock above all. I don't care what Leo said later... Hell, I even don't particularly like his later, non-Fender creations. I find the Tele design kind of singular in today's world of electric guitars.... There's nothing that looks quite like a Tele and that includes the headstock. I think it looks more like the headstock of a more classic instrument like a violin or so. I love it and I'll probably never want a guitar that doesn't have a headstock like this...

    Headstock envy

I think it just depends on what you are used to. I've been playing a Jaguar lately. At first, I was thinking "what a big honkin' headstock". Doesn't seem so big after seeing it daily for a while.

I Vote For The Small One

    In My Humble Opinion:
The only thing prettier than a small tele headstock is the Tele it's attached to... and the only thing prettier than a tele with a small headstock....IS THE SOUND IT MAKES.

But what do I know.... I thought the '65 Mustang was beautiful.

Yeah, but was he talking about his design for the Stratocaster headstock or the larger CBS era headstock (which I think he had nothing to do with)

    Battin' 1,000.....

Never owned, played or wanted the big headstocks....they just look wrong and detract from the overall appearance of a strat or tele. JMHO & YMMV.
