Thumbs and Danny learned a lot from each other. They roomed together when they were both working for Roger Miller in the early eighties. Danny said that Thumbs was always pulling some crazy thing out of his bag of tricks.
I saw Thumbs play at the steel guitar convention in St. Louis a couple of years before he passed away. He was setting in with Buddy Emmons and Phil Baugh. Thumbs was setting a just few feet from Phil. Thumbs would play some incredible lick and Phil would say, "You can't do that!" "I saw it, but I don't believe it!" Phil was using his pedal guitar and Thumbs was playing almost the same licks without the pedals. Happy holidays, Dirt |
