All but ONE of my guitars are tuned to "standard E".
My "Relicaster" is tuned to open G (great for Keef stuff) and I must admit I find myself playing it more and more. Both 5th & 6th are tuned to G which gives it that great "droning" sound. |

Use a tuner - tune string by string. Then even out after that.
Have been writing a lot of stuff using Open G with slide lately. Also DADGAD. I use drop D once in a while. And, standard tuing of course. I am going to try open D one of these days.

well...
My tele gets standard tuning, even for playing slide. I will only take one guitar with me when playing out so the occasional song that requires slide is done in standard. Having said that I prefer open E for doing that slide thing.
My Martin D-28, however...at last count I've used about 18 different alternate tunings.

I always tune to A=440. If i'm doing a classical guitar piece that calls for it, I'll lower the 6th string to D, but otherwise, I'm a standard tuning kinda guy. I've also been doing alot of jazz stuff lately, so I tune to A=440, and then check it against the piano, which is what the horns all tune to (the piano's Bbs). Jazz charts are hard enough without having to compensate for alternate tunings on the fly.

Yeah, A = 440... I have enough trouble with that... let alone mucking with alt tunings. Back in the day I carried a tuning fork. Now we've got Boss tuners and strobs. I'm pig happy.
Works for me.

Always standard on electric except when messing around with Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl, when I do the double drop D. On acoustic, I use the regular drop D a lot, and I have messed with open G a few times.

We have half dozen or so tunes in Drop D. I have used Open G for 'Honky Tonk Women' but anymore just bump through it in standard tuning.
In the olden days (well for me, mid 70's) we stayed in Eb. Cheers, Bob

Being the punk rock/emo/alt rock bastage that I am, I tune down the half step. It doesnt really do anything, but it works that much better with my range, and I just like it better.
