Replacing fretboard dots

I have been looking at some of my Teles lately and was thinking about replacing some of those boring plastic fretboard markers with some nice abalone. I'm wondering if anyone has done this and if it's the job from hell. I have little experience with any of this stuff, but when I do it I do take care to follow instructions and take my time. I would certainly appreciate tales and advice from anyone who's replaced the dots. Thanks.

once while removing the finish on a maple neck with jasco paint remover some of it got on the dots and they melted ! I know this dosent help but its good for a laugh or two !

Well, I'll make sure not to use Jasco Paint remover! Then again it might be an easy way of getting those dots out of there without routing them out with a butter knife!

it was pretty ugly ! how bad was it ? I turned that neck into a scalloped fret board !
